about the Powerfab 125 WT 0.5T mini digger

i am working on this digger hydraulics

what is the direction of flow from tank to spool

what is the purpose of the unit circled
does the flow pass out of the unit into spool or other way round

how can i remove this unit from the hose/spool? the nut doesnt unscrew at either end.

if anyone is familiar with these diggers at all?

(b) is the return filter for oil returning to the tank under low(ish ) pressure
(e) is the return line -- easily determined by the fact it is held with a jubilee clip - low pressure -- all high pressure lines will have crimped high pressure fittings
(f&g) looks to be return filter assembly removed from tank

your pump looks to have a mesh cage pick up filter strainer around it, which presumably has been removed from the tank as an assembly ... could do with some clearer pix TBH
why do you want to remove (e) ?
flow from tank to spool is through the pump, which pressurises the oil to give you a working hydraulic pressure and returns from spool to tank through the return filter at a significantly reduced pressure as there is little resistance .. operating any control lever diverts that high pressure to whichever service the lever controls, any surplus is bled off to the return .. (with little resistance) , the pressure dissipates.

thanks for the fast reply!!!! the flow makes sense

one of the rams leaks fluid maybe because of dirt in the hydraulic fluid; so my initial goal is to replace the fluid. first i wanted to clean the tank but after taking out the lid bolts it seems impossible to access

when draining the fluid it was totally black. dont know if fluid was ever replaced- this digger is around 30 years old!!!

goal is to replace engine with electric motor for usage indoors. would you recommend to detach nuts shown image 'n' to proceed

i take it to detach a hose from spool you losen the nuts (image p) or do they just pull away by force

the hoses are screwed onto the adaptors fitted to the spool block, usually with a swivel nut so simply undo them .. can't really tell from your pic of the return pipe whether it's a solid hose tail or a swivel on an adaptor, but looks to be a solid hose tail, so need to detach the pipe or at least enable the fitting to swivel in the pipe, unless the other end is free/detached.

I see now that the cage is surrounding the coupling between the motor and the pump (keep fingers safe) .. the pump will have some form of flexi coupling between the motor and the pump (many options available),but is highly unlikely to separate easily, by simply removing the pump flange mounting bolts ... you'll almost certainly need to expose the coupling, by removing the guard mesh cover.

tank lid looks to be stuck down with some sort of sealing compound (silicon RTV/Hermetite/whatever). gently prise it off ;) ... assume the pipe coming off that inspection cover is your oil pick up for the pump .. if so it should have some sort of strainer/filter on the bottom of it, that'll almost certainly need a good clean :giggle: ... put your hand in the return filter hole and have a feel about ;)

Ram in question looks to be pitted .. this will damage your gland and scraper seals in the ram end cap, which'll cause it to 'leak oil'

bottom of tank certainly looks to be a drain plug.

as for replacing the engine with an electric motor ... what HP is the engine? Dare say it runs at circa 3000rpm ... average leccy motor runs at 1420rpm ... you will also need a motor with a similar HP capacity as the engine you remove .. you only get out what you put in, power-wise ... will make the machine slow and gutless other wise .. a 5hp, 240V motor will be LARGE and from memory, at one time, you had to notify the leccy board if you were intending on connecting a 5hp motor to their supply (draws a LOT of current) ... and will NOT be a cheap thing to source. be better off banging a hose on the exhaust and feeding it out of a window :giggle:

black oil is not good ... should be a golden yellow fluid you can see through ... bare in mind that each ram will have at least one end of them full of 'the black stuff' whether open or closed. one side of the ram piston will be harbouring what you want to remove ... if possible, stretch the dipper/boom out on the ground, detach the pin from the rod end, with the rams closed, fit a drain line to the gland/open end of the ram, detach the hose feeding the other end of the cylinder and GENTLY extend the ram with some compressed air ... make sure the drain line is well captured into, say a gallon can, as things can happen fast as the air pressure builds and forces the crud out of the other end of the cylinder ... alternately and more preferably -- take the rams off completely and carry out the process of purging them on a bench, with the ram held securely .. remember it'll happen quick if you don't have a good method of regulating the air pressure and introducing the pressure gradually .. even then it can still move pretty rapidly as the air pressure overcomes the oil's resistance. repeating the process from each end a few times'll get 98% of the crud out
Whenever I buy a new (to me / s/hand att I have to purge it, as my Hydrema runs bio-oil which does not suffer contaminants (mineral oil/etc.) happily ..

I have some electric excavator machines. They weigh about 400kg and have 4 kw 415 v three phase motors. I’m not sure you would want to go for much less power, particularly if you want to work a hydraulic breaker.

I also have a 1/2 tonne dumper with a 2.2kw 110v electric motor. It’s slow and just about has enough power to carry a full load up a gentle slope.

Just a random thought - would twin electric motors be feasible?

'bout 5.5 HP then Rob ..... could watch yer meter racing round running that on single phase

coupled to the same single pump??? be an interesting set up :unsure::unsure:

I run them of a 10kva geny, one at a time obviously. I had one running on an inverter just under low load in the workshop and it would trip a 20amp breaker if you endstroked a ram.

Yes they have a single pump.

The hydraulic system is remote controlled electrically. It’s mind bogglingly complicated. There are two big valve blocks and both of them are bristling with solenoids. Some are just open or closed and others are driven by square wave signals with adjustable mark space ratios to get the proportional control. It was an absolute nightmare figuring out how it all worked.

I have just agreed to sell both the excavators. Hopefully the guy gives me the money this coming week so I never have to think about that control system ever again. 😀😀😀
