Computer vision system for recognizing plant machinery

Works well, then?
For machines that it has been trained on, yeah, pretty well, but not perfect (see attached result for your profile image). I can't tell if your profile is a tracked loading shovel or a bull dozer. I would love to know how you classify it. (also, note that the confidence level is kind of low, indicating its not terribly sure)

I love university's. Churning out such vibrant intellectual useful ideas that provide such useful everyday solutions to help people in there lives.

I suggest you teach it to identify hand tools too aswell as types of barrier, sign and pipe. Market it as a solution for any form of university graduate being put in a management position on a construction site as they are always ****ing clueless and incapable of understanding basic knowledge or principles, economics and other requirements.

I'm a business owner btw...... The idea has two markets..... 3 year olds with a I pad and 21 year olds with a diploma. Unfortunately neither of those groups have any money worth taking so afraid I'm out.

I'd hope so, ones a dog and the other is the size of a small house. If you can't teach them the difference between those there's not alot of help. 🤣

There are useful applications. It would be handy for it to identify components at attachments particularly on cranes. Like fly jibs, fallopian tubes, long stands, searchers, long weights, pack weights etc.

I appreciate the honest feedback. I do think most people here are missing the point: this was an internship project intended to be used for the interns to learn about machine learning and artificial intelligence. We did not set out to solve any specific problem which is why this seems so off the mark. I just thought I'd share it because you never know. You really never know what some creative mind will come up with.

That's actually an excellent idea. One of the main difficulties of this "computer vision" problem is that the "tractor" is often the same or very similar but with different attachments, which makes it very difficult for the system to determine what class of machine it is. We've already done some work in this vein to improve object recognition but maybe focusing specifically on the attachments is a vector worth exploring. Thanks for the idea!

So, we developed this for an existing client for a very specific use case but I'm not at liberty to provide any details. That said, the IP is ours so we are free to explore alternatives, which is what I'm doing here. We don't have any concrete plans for monetizing. As I don't work in the construction field, I don't know enough about the business to be able to make any recommendations, which is why I'm sharing it here. Maybe someone here who works on site, for example, or for a manufacturer, might recognize a use case.

We could probably create a "plant spotting" type of application but monetizing that is a challenge and, if my personal experience is of any value, construction workers aren't particularly fond of having their picture taken while on the job… (I've had my share of encounters where I've had to explain the nature of the image, its intended use, etc.)

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, most plant machinery is bought and sold via online auctions. Perhaps the people who run those web sites would be interested because the system could be tweaked to return the exact data they require when setting up the sale of a new machine?? Essentially, all the site administrator needs to do is upload the picture and the system then fills in the fields for the type of machine and possibly other, common details. Also, it could be combined with another system to determine the age of the machine, or the general condition (poor, good, excellent). The possibilities really are endless but it helps a lot if you understand the industry, which I don't and is the reason I'm here with you all today.

Now that this has been explained to me, very funny. I actually got a good laugh out of it (and I honestly thought that maybe there was an attachment called "fallopian tubes" :unsure: :ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO::LOL:)

A mastiff is a lathe FFS...see what I mean 🤣🤣

Where this might have an application is when auctioneers go into companies that have gone bust. The staff that would have known what everything was have been laid off and half the time auctioneers haven’t a clue what they are elooking as to list them very poorly.

I’m not necessarily talking about construction plant I’m talking about engineering workshop machines and materials etc.
