Computer vision system for recognizing plant machinery

Hi!

My name is Ted Stresen-Reuter. I am the CTO of an application development company. We recently created a system that accurately identifies plant machinery (360 excavators, backhoes, tracked cranes, etc.) just by looking at a picture of the machine. For the curious, this is a Machine Learning computer vision solution.

For example, image you don't know anything about construction. You see a construction site with some machinery and you want to know more about one of the machines. With this system, you can take a picture of the machine and it will give you some detailed information about the type of machine and where you can go to get training on how to operate it. Remember, this is just an example. Once a machine is recognized, anything can be done with the info.

The system has not been commercialized and we have no idea if it has any practical application but we wanted to let people in this industry know of its existence in case you might need something like this. I would be more than happy to do a demo in case you are curious, no commitment, of course. Just contact me here on planttalk or via email.

Ha ha. Point taken. We've reinvented the wheel! Like I said, this was an internship project…

Most likely yes, the brand doesn't matter. The model has a surprising amount of flexibility.

Maybe? I looked up Mogatsu but couldn't find any construction machinery images. Trucktor would probably be classified as an agricultural tractor.

Excellent question! We do have some test images without decals and yes, it works.

Actually, that said, there may be some classes of machine where the training images all had decals and in that case, it's possible the model won't work as well, but I bet it would. The system looks at the entire machine (and background, and other elements in the picture).

Oh yeah? I know a bloke who can tell the brand, model, how many hours and country of origin just from a flake of paint from the machine
A sniff of the seat and he'll tell you the age, sex and dietary habits of the operator too

Oh yeah, and breeds of pets, and bird calls, and people's faces and numbers of other things. I have no idea if people might find this valuable or not, which is why I'm asking!

I struggle to see how your wizardry is more powerful than Google...

I'm not claiming it is. The advantage to owning your own system is that you control it. You don't have to pay to access it (whether with your personal data or with actual money). Note that I'm publishing this here hoping to connect with business owners (might be the wrong forum).

Google was able to find similar pictures, which is amazing, but it couldn't tell me what the machine actually was. I tried it on our system too and our system was unable to find a classification for it, but we only recognize about 40 types of machines, so, not too surprising. What is that in your profile picture? A lathe?
