do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
So long as they are a decent company to work for it seems a decent job to me. I think 24 an hour is decent money too. And that is realistically the same as what anyone working on a small firm would do quite happily.
totally agree .... you'd be approaching the 40% tax bracket working for that on 6 x 8 hr days, without any O/t rates, etc. added.

I phoned up a local firm who I have known for years and used for self drive diggers, I normally just hire a digger this time I asked if he would like to do the job for me as I'm getting a bit old for this job ,he said could not find any decent drivers or labourers who wanted to work and the ones he had demanded £1000 aweek for a flat week and dossed about all day so he told them goodbye and now do manly self drive and got 10 ton tippers

Brilliant thread !
“ im an operator not a labourer”
Wants rained off at 10am for a few spits and paid full shift
First to volunteer to go to the builders merchant but seems to have the worst luck ever with road blocks etc on his way back .

Won’t drive dumper unless the choice is dumper or shovel then he’s doing you a big favour

Busiest guy on site telling the boys how it is when the boss is in .

Always telling everyone else on site how much more he’s been offered to work on a big job .

Never takes a piece (lunchbox) and always needs to go to the cafe in the next village as the one beside the site is shite .

Met a similiar guy, first day I met him he said he does t really stop for breaks and works all day......
Proceeds to have at least 10, 20 minute fag breaks a day, any trips to the builders merchant were 2+ hours

They are all on the CPCS Facebook group - what a poisonous bunch of seat-polishing shithouses they are!
Thinking about this in a bit more depth I’d definitely use the comments in that group to decide whether to hire an op or not. They are all there giving it the Bertie Big Bollox but I’m sure it’ll bite some of them on the arse soon enough. I’d chance my arm that a lot of them are agency drivers and refused hires will soon get around as the work dries up!

There are times when I would chuck it in for 1k for a 5 day week sat on a machine , but I know damn well that before long I'd get more involved to stave off the boredom ......thats how I got myself into the mess I'm in.
I know that feeling! Personally, I could never stand having to be there between 8-5 every day. Freedom is priceless.

I'm on the other side of the coin and would love the freedom but I find the idea of giving up the guaranteed income very very difficult. And I have to put my family's security first.
Heavily toying with the idea of moving to an area where cheaper housing could ease the burden, especially as wages seem to vary very little.
