I remember my first defender i had, I could only reclaim 50% vat (owned outright) on that because they argued with me that it had 3 seats so I could use it for ‘pleasure’ there wasn’t much pleasurable about the thing to be honest!

it can be converted to a commercial prior to first registration, there was a firm up north who did this for disco's.

All rear seats removed, bolts welded over, proper bulkhead, windows blanked out etc. A proper conversion which was accepted by HMRC.

But that's just added cost to an expensive motor. It's really not rocket science to make a commercial version of a commercial vehicle.
Tbh I'm surprised there is no pickup version in the first place. Kind of the point of the defender platform that everything is interchangeable. And mercedes can manage to do it to a high quality still.

I’d imagine the biggest issue is building something light enough to still have the necessary payload to meet the commercial criterion whilst also meeting NCAP rules and still having it ruggedly built enough to tick the boxes they were aiming to achieve as a Defender replacement. Separate chassis adds significant weight to the build.

I think it's the dual purpose category that needs to be a set payload. Plenty of vans can't carry a tonne but are still registered commercial

I’d imagine the biggest issue is building something based on what they feel a Chelsea tractor with some fancy options for everything but forgetting what the original defender core market was
Fixed it for you 🤣

Problem is a fair majority where expecting a proper defender replacement workhorse but what has been made is something that resembles an old defender but 3 times the cost.

Having looked again at the website there is a commercial version but tick a few options and it's 63k including vat for a 2 seat vehicle

Tbf you can spend 50k plus vat on a transit tipper or any other decent spec van if you start ticking options, everything’s silly money! Wouldn’t dream of spending that sort of cash on something that’s not really earning

Tbh of anyone ever wonders why the Auzzy style landcruiser Ute isn't sold over here this is the prime example..... 63k sounds expensive but in all likelihood most individuals wouldn't
Flinch at that for a s**t posers car, and the average transit custom can't be a million miles off it these days.

The classic 300tdi defender was in its day a cheap workhorse, with the last iterations of the brand still being purchased till the end by the likes of ESB's and waterboards as specialist vehicles. Fact is though that the day Isuzu put there big boy trousers on and accommodated the needs of these customers to have chassis cab units to mount cherry pickers on or custom backs along with winches etc the days where numbered for the shitbox defender.

Unfortunately the reality with the Grenadier is becoming apparent that they have tailored there truck to sell to pricks first before business customers...... And whilst there not going to cry over Dave, Lancs and Shaun's lost sales the reality is they might of cried over the lost business selling to land rovers traditional audiences.

That said, I'm not sure following the long gap and use of Isuzus that they would of reclaimed those customers......

Just my opinion

They could reclaim them on long term operating costs. Whilst the Isuzus rangers and Hilux's are common roand here with utilities they are all less than 5 years old, whereas there are still a couple of defenders owned by power companies and I think a td5 is still running round with them but they do seem to run a very aging fleet. Still common to see previous generation transits and they haven't been produced in 10 years.

Talk about running an aging fleet, I saw an early 00’s sprinter in western power livery the other day!

I can't justify spending north of 50k on a vehicle, let alone a sub 3.5t work truck, it's absolutely bonkers even a high spec custom is north of 40k. Will be running my ranger into the ground, luckily my chassis has been done so should get a good few years
@TiltyShaun looks like Defender starts at 41ish for the 90 and the discovery is north of 52k
Grenadier diesel has a payload of 796kg and the petrol is 871kg

Bang on...I'll say it again...if we really wanted sustainability we'd make stuff last more than 5 years....but that's another topic.

Likely one of the thumper wagons that sends a HV pulse down a faulty cable to pinpoint the fault. About 100k worth of equipment fixed in them from memory and don't rack up the miles.

Wpd/national grid still have a few defenders floating about..... SWW have got rid of there's I think.
