Theft insurance for non-commercial?

Hi folks,

I bought my digger for working round my property, I actually work in IT so it couldn't be further from my day job. The digger will never leave the property, probably see about 100 hours use in the average year but JCBInsurance want £900 a year to insure it....I'm only after theft insurance not liability etc. Digger is a JCB 803+ probably worth around 9k.

The woman on the phone was surprised I was shocked, I told her my car insurance is £300 and I do 70mph up the motorway with that but she didn't seem to get it. Maybe I'm incredibly out of touch with insurance for these machines

I can get standard home insurance on moneysupermarket and add the digger as a 'special item' above £2000 value but I get the feeling if it came to a claim they would consider it an abuse of their terms.

Any one any tips?

Much obliged!

Funnily enough I got a quote off NFU for the Hydrema this week, partially out of interest, a little with a possible view to it taking the odd trek locally maybe and mostly for fire/theft cover .

TPFT -- they wouldn't just do fire and theft on my property -- which was my initial inquiry, was £333.00 and Comprehensive £546 .... I need to get this all in writing to see just what the covers are and how comprehensive, comprehensive actually is

so I'd say Jakie B are taking the piss against a machine valued at £9K .... my quote was based on an agreed value of £15k
as I've said before many times ... aside from the two years when NFU lost the plot with motor ins., I've always found them very good and are always willing to negotiate or vary terms on stuff to fit your requirements

I have the 1.5 tonne mini digger and 1 tonne skip loader on Agricultural vehicle insurance with NFU Mutual for £378 all in.
This is for TPF&T and covers road use.
NFU didn't seem bothered about model or type. Simply took chassis No. as registration and quote based on market value.

I keep wondering each year at renewal why I bother. Like yourself I really only need theft insurance if some scumbag came and lifted them from the shed but no-one seemed to do theft only on a stand alone policy and the household insurance wouldn't quote for individual high value items other than a lawnmower.

I’m with hiscox for home insurance through a broker and they insured things like my bailer for 16k under it. Even had 20k’s worth of 30mm ammunition on it at one stage!

What have you got that fires 30mm? Where do you fire it? Pictures would be good.

My Plantmaster policy with JCB which covers my 8026, 801, engcon and plant trailer is £539 so something doesn't seem right there? They have been very helpful when I've adjusted things in the past but then they are always happy to take your money.
Not so sure what its like if you need to claim....

Just giving an update in case it helps anyone else.

Got in touch with NFU-Mutual, they have policies for agricultural equipment. Again it was a fly in the soup that I worked in IT and was not a business, almost like there is no checkbox for this on their form, they had to call and discuss it with their under-writers but were happy to provide cover by labelling me a 'small holder' due to having a few acres of fields. Overall cost was £247 for third party, fire and theft - and £385 fully comp. The TPFT suits me fine for my needs.

I can never get my head round insurance, on the same call I queried house + contents, for £300,000 building rebuild cover, £60,000 of contents replacement, cover £10,000 of 'items outside the home', 2 million of liability, 50,000 of legal cover they only want £278 per year. But a 9k digger that will never leave the field they want the same or more...oh well, at least its put my mind at ease about it going walkies during the night.

Cheers for the help lads!

Yep I can understand. This is the time of year they all crawl out of the woodwork for me. Might try the small holder thing

Used to have JCB do all my contractor insurance and claims where dealt with efficiently and fairly.

After having several years off and getting back into work as a one man band that also has a 20 acre small holding I have found JCB less interested and NFU happy to take my money so they now have our Farm liability, my contractors and digger liability along with a collection of vehicles. They don’t have the household insurance as they are miles away on premium and as much as they say there cover is better the Rottweiler(wife) is home all day so robber and fire is not a major issue!!

I’ve insured my vans with NFU for years (for the sole reason that they have always been cheapest at renewal).
A few years ago I bought a new Land Rover and it was mentioned at the time that there was an NFU discount available - when I enquired with my local office they informed me that I wasn’t a member (despite spending over £5k a year with them for the past 10 years!). ‘How do I become a member?’ said I?
‘You can’t as you aren’t a farmer’ was the response, so no discount was had.
I have subsequently bought a place with a bit of land, now keep sheep etc etc and enquired again about NFU membership recently. Long and the short of it was I joined (couple of hundred quid a year) and immediately got a rebate (members discount) on my current vehicle insurance for £350. Happy days! (but why the plums in the office didn’t tell me about this/let me join sooner is a bone of contention!!!).

have rated NFU highly many times on here .... they did lose the plot on vehicle ins. for a while, but now have my biz back and at sensible premiums too.
can never get their house ins. down to the same similar comparative levels though  .... always there or thereabouts the same as the competition and well over 500 quid a year :(:(

Haha she's barking the orders soon as I sit down:LOL::LOL:
but is she still "livid" Minty ??

for those who're wondering  , or not familiar with Minty's signature/tag line from the BCEF ...
It was an exceptionally clever play on words  from the landy boys slogan "one life-live it"

his tag was "one wife-livid" :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: always makes me smile, that one :giggle:
