I'm up at the same sort of weight that Giles is at currently as I'm having to dodge between three different projects.
Once the weather settles down I can shed a whole lot of just in case essentials that I can't see a scenario that I'd ever need them all on one job 😂

Can't you leave kit on site ??
Working for a large firm and council contracting we show up and get sent all over the place but I still only carry hand tools, laser level, cat scan and Stihl saw.
The blokes with vans carry a generator wackerplate and cement mixer but they have more room

I've just had a look in the back of my truck and I don't think I can see more than 200kgs worth of tools. And it has everything for day to day.
What are you carrying to get that much weight.
Wackerplate and generator are the only things I can think of that would add to much weight
Lots of people forget suff like truckman tops can knock your weight down a good bit aswell

I'm pretty much on local stuff at the moment but the road closures here are making line of sight jobs half an hour and a fair few miles apart 🤪

It depends on which one I suppose. I have a full fibreglass one which I can easily pick up myself, but I had one with sliding windows once and a full metal frame inside. I resorted to lifting it off with a telehandler.

To be fair it must be a struggle to stay underweight with all the PPE you'll have to carry 🤣

So maybe 350 kgs of tools after allowing for the truckman. Far from excessive, don't worry about it.

I know you joke but ppe isn't the problem. For us It's signs and barriers.

Realistically it's an extra vehicle just for tm. With a driver sat in the cab with the engine idling all-day at the councils expense.
But vehicles need to be euro 6 as they are conscious of emissions

I have the decked draws which holds all the mechanic tools and odds and end, chains etc then other stuff sits on top in various boxes. Nee truck as side opening windows which will help access.

I have a set of these drawers to fit a Ranger if anyones interested, id like to get them out of my garage. They were great for organising tools etc. but with a roll top fitted rather than a canopy, the space on top was just to small for the larger items that wouldn't fit in the drawers, now using a gear mate sliding bed.
Drawers would probably fit other pickups with a bit of ingenuity tempImageHQOqvB.pngtempImageGeHJcO.png

Just been through the same process with my van, 'refining' out all the stuff I have accumulated over the last year.

I've always had the mindset of not wanting to be lacking a tool or fixing and losing time as a result but have taken it to an extreme so the entire contents of the business is in the van at any one time.

I've just taken on a better yard closer to home so I've thinned out the less frequently used tools as well as smaller stocks of consumables (diesel, spray, blades, nails, screws, fluids etc.)

By my maths over 200kg removed

Should save a bit of fuel plus means I can distribute the weight better, makes towing easier etc.

I think it's also a case of you fill whatever size van you have. I work with a bloke who has a twin cab transit and the amount of crap he carries is unreal. Permanently carries a pressure washer sack barrow 3 wheel barrows ballast and cement, on top of a similar list to giles.

I have one of the high top canopies now. Ugly as hell but way more useful than a normal one. Would love an n and j one one-day.

IMG_20230407_092947013_HDR.jpg

Just had Stihl saw laser level cat and gennie and a bag with cordless drill impact and grinder stuff in the space left.
Leaves enough room to pick up any extras in he space left.

Also a pool of vehicles and trailers in the yard if I need lots more space.

Last few posts are confirming my current thoughts about my next 'main' vehicle.
Basically if I get a pick up with a canopy, no matter how clever I am with the back, I'd still be better off with another Discovery and trailers😆😆 and a tipper for tight access/chipper jobs.
No one truck can do it all...

Not all canopies are made equal. The fashion canopies vary from alright to absolutely terrible. The high top gull wing type are better but @V8Druid has some pictures of another forum members canopy that fully replaces the tub. Which would be mutts nutts but dear.
My canopy will still hold way more than a discovery boot.

You leave that lot on display in the back of your truck and don't get burgled? I've had my pickup broken into more times than I care to remember. Now all the expensive stuff is in locked drawers, but the scum still smash their way into to top just to see what is there.
