I'm on a week long surveying course ATM

What are they teaching you in a week? Auto (Dumpy) Level, Total Stations, GPS?

I only ask as i'm a Site Engineer myself

Auto levels and total stations. Only the basics obviously, I would dread to think how long you would have to sit in a classroom to become fully versed with it.

Machine "tickets" are pretty pointless but the the actual training courses for other things can sometimes be very useful.

First aid is definitely the one that everyone should have and I definitely don't mind the 2 year refreshers.

All this stuff can be learnt online watching YouTube videos now days. But sometimes it's quicker and easier to sit in a classroom

In all honesty. I don't bother, why should I give hard earned money to someone who can give me a bit of paper to say I already do it safely.

I bother because it proves that employees have been trained, so if they f**k up and have an accident I can prove it’s their responsibility not mine! (And of course to try and prevent the accident in the first place)
This is why the 18 year old was out with instructor yesterday in the big 3.5 ton with a trailer on, doesn’t legally need it as he has B+E automatically, but the jump from a fiesta van to a 7000kg train weight with 12 meters or so length is a big step. Hopefully the cost of the instructor and a days lost work will reduce risk and increase safety.

I’ve had 4 or 5 of my lads start at 16. You have to take a deep breath sometimes, but we all had to start somewhere. Apprenticeship is 4 years now and they need another 2-4 years of courses and training after that as well, before they can be good all rounders with enough experience to be out on their own on any job.

I’ve had 4 or 5 of my lads start at 16. You have to take a deep breath sometimes, but we all had to start somewhere. Apprenticeship is 4 years now and they need another 2-4 years of courses and training after that as well, before they can be good all rounders with enough experience to be out on their own on any job.

I think 5 years is not out of it for a decent apprenticeship. It depends what it is your training in obviously. Certain pupils can get there quicker but most need all their time to be any use

Wasted half a day yesterday on asbestos awareness training. One of the management companies we work for insists on everyone doing it every year at our expense, obviously. Even when I pointed out to them that the legislation says only needed if likely to come in to contact with asbestos, which we are not and only needs renewing if there Is a change in the job. Their response was the computer insists on it to issue purchase orders. So they get charged more to cover the cost and hassle, but they don’t care as the jobs we do for them they add a management fee on top and pass it on to the taxpayer.

That is why you should do the Asbestos Awareness training and what the legislation is all about (although you didn't say what you did when you found the suspected asbestos), but in my work there is close to zero chance of coming across asbestos.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not that arrogant that I don't believe in training. Knowing what you are doing is top plan in my book.
I just don't believe in training as a box ticking exercise.

I've got SMSTS to do at the end of the month.
I used to have loads of tickets but I've let a load of the rubbish lapse, I've still got the plant tickets 360 tracked and wheeled, dumper and telehandler. I've let confined spaces and abrasive wheels lapse as I was never asked for them
