To be fair I've never seen mention of pure hydrogen as a replacement for nat gas but a mixture of hydrogen and ? which i guess lowers emissions and helps keep it in the pipes.

have read that elsewhere too .... but they can not do it if you are not indebted to them, or have made efforts to recover said debt and only after informing you of their plans and why apparently.
interestingly .... I used to be on a std 3 mthly variable DD, paid on demand and like the rest of the country, in arrears. Always paid on the nail, by the DD facility. Then they suddenly decided to alter this to a monthly fixed DD, again in arrears, as they can't charge you for what they haven't supplied you with. However, instead of allowing the usual 3 mthly to occurr and then changing, they did it a few days before that was due to be billed and paid, resulting in my outstanding bill to be anywhere between 3 and 4 mths in arrears, which i thought was a bloody odd way of going about it ........ think I might just 'catch up' that original 3 mthly and bring it up to a 1 to 30/31 day debt only ..... crafty bastards

You’re still talking about very old technology managing to keep it contained for days at a time, if not longer, Gra. In that time there’s been advances, 316 stainless is virtually impermeable at normal temperatures, there are ceramic coatings that reduce it to almost zero in carbon steel, Teflon seals are used in some pipe work.
Also mixing hydrogen with natural gas doesn’t make a squat of difference to the hydrogen leaking out. It doesn’t bond to the natural gas and sits within the mix as a discrete molecule. it’s not impossible to seal hydrogen in a system, just harder, in the same way that what will seal a water pipe won’t seal some oils, or other fluids.

There’s still some cast iron gas pipes round here. They’d leak if you shoved coal through them.

Ofgem's rules state that energy companies must speak to customers before moving them on to a prepayment meter, but the regulator said it was concerned this was not always happening.
Suppliers may put customers on prepayment meters if they struggle to keep up with bills, arguing it helps them to control how much and how often they pay for energy.
But Rosi Avis, who heads up the Manchester Branch of Citizens Advice, said remote switching is "disconnection by the backdoor".
"If customers are unaware that they are on a pre-payment meter they might not top up and therefore they are more likely to self-disconnect from their gas or electric," she explained. "

Needed a new meter in the refurb a couple of weeks ago. Gas man came out and started for like for like, prepayment but not smart meter. I said what is the difference, he replied you can self cut this one off if you run out of credit. If you have a smart meter they can cut you off even if you have credit!!

last time I looked the roll out is at less than 12% ... sooner or later they're going to get the message

I had a letter the other day advising me to book a time for my “essential upgrade” smart meter installation. Can’t recall the exact words now, but it was suggesting that the installation of the smart meter was to save the planet!

I had a brand new gas installation earlier this year, smart meter the lot. Has never given them a reading so have to keep doing them manually. Won’t give me a date to come and sort it just tell me they’ll be in touch.
Had one at a customers last week that has been stuck on 00000.003 since it was fitted! I was there fitting a new boiler, apparently has reported it twice but heard nothing.
