Hello from right down south in Dorset. Long time reader first time poster..

I am yet another mug looking to set and buy themselves hell of a job as an owner operator. Looking into some a bit different rather than the usual mini digger work so looking at smaller concrete line pumps or small drilling rig. Drilling rig thinking mini pile and exportation. Not operated either so a big unknown and other than having a go in a filed not sure how to get some knowledge. I have however been involved in the controls, hydraulics etc on both concrete pumps and drilling rig in the oil industry so have knowledge of their operation in that context but not in a smaller operation or hands on with a small machine.

There is a local market for the concrete pumping and I believe a region demand for the drilling from speaking to a few small developers.

Looking information on sources of work especially in the drilling game, what insurance I would need, regulations, gotchas in machine specification.

I know I know clueless but trying gain some more information.

All the local volumetric concrete suppliers around here have there own line pumps.
One my way has their own pump and the other company uses one guy. Would imagine most concrete yards will either have their own or have a guy to do theirs.
Good money I'm sure it's north of 300 a pour here, 2 or 3 pours a day is very good money as long as you can keep booked up.
Mini drilling and mini piling I don't have any experience with although hear it's expensive, same as doing root barriers

What about the inpact driving pile rig. Not sure of the correct terminology. Using a road compressor to hammer down lengths of pipe, welding sections on as you go. Hardly any out lay.

Issue is that it's structural engineer dependant.

I've done quite a few augerbores at 2' to pile for structures rather than digging a 2'x2' footing to depth for block piers. Trying to get a design engineer to say it's acceptable is a uphill struggle....... I've got a mast in the yard which I intend to make into a multipurpose rig for test drilling from 1' to 4" and auger drilling to 24" aswell as hammering in platypus anchors.....

It will work well for me, but I'd not be keen on it as a standalone.

R.e concrete pumps - expensive and if it goes wrong watch the pounds and arguments!

How are root barriers installed?

With concrete pumps unless all in house it’s a right ball ache as pump blames concrete why it’s not pumping and concrete blames pump .

Any breakdown gets very expensive quick if mid pump

Most concrete firms have their own pump

There are some doing it who tend to supply concrete as well through accounts with national providers

My mini pilling lads have a few rigs and boss man is qualified engineer plus geologists on books for probing etc.

Grundomat end driven piles and mini ring beams might be way to go but is there that much call for them around you?

When I was subbing for a company last year they apparently drilled down to install the barriers, not sure what version they were using but was done by a mini dilling rig

Seems that way here to. I was thinking of being able to grab the jobs where it marginal to get a pump in if I could find a nice small pump. For instance I just did a slab (as a family favour not my main gig ) @2m3 and the pump was £500 so we opted to barrow, I mainly work alone but got someone in to help but its bloody stressful and I was flat out! I would have grabbed a pump for £250-300.

Yeah I was running though that scenario. Issue during a pour, footing / slab ruined, digging out eek.

Not heard of that before, have I got it right it looks like a percussive tool for running small utilities?

Looks similar to something else I was looking at. Pit drop horizontal drilling machine for small utilities saw it after watching a video of some US boys using one, just like a mini drilling rig with swivel joint to pump water / mud down, top drive (but now on its side) and a a couple of rams for thrust, about 200 - 300kg dropped in pit.. Struggling to find a a machine seller that is not Chinese company and I want support / spare parts availability. That actually look pretty simple and could be fabricated given time but I don't have the time for ironing out all the mistakes when you build your own machine.

You're already looking at the pump idea with a view to doing it cheaper than the bigger boys. But you don't want to be sending a pump out without an op with it and by the time you factor in getting to jobs, setting up, doing the job cleaning out etc you'd be lucky to get 2 jobs a day done. By the time you factor in paying a wage and a pump even a small one won't be cheap those already doing it aren't dear.

All the small drilling companies down here in Cornwall as a basic have to run
2 pickups that can tow 3.5t
1 ifor trailer for tracked mini drill rig and drill rods
One fuckoff huge towed compressor the size of a small catering burger van
2 men to run it

Yep was expecting something like that. or a 7.5 + trailer. I have HGV license but of course that does bring in O license pain. Jealous of my Canadian cousin with 16,000lb trailers behind their pick-ups!

that's a nice looking rig ...... do they run longer hoses to the power source if they can't get it in where the rig has to go ???
They probably have but if the rig fits the power pack does as well never seen them with out they are as wide as your Jake mini

slightly contradictory posts there Stu ?????:unsure:
the first pic is the sort of thing I was thinking of ..... bloody hard to manoeuvre that power pack in a tight spot, when attached, that the tracks'd sprag about in happily
