Might as well have a compact loader, would be miles better off-road and much more versatile.
My Multione 8.4 will do 1.2t (admittedly not up high) but only weighs 1.9t itself. A larger model might prove more suited to your tasks?

Pretty sure they are rated at 1.5t lift? They are a lot cheaper than comparable machines. But I’m not convinced on the build quality…..Not very good capacity 1.2 tonnes I think

id be worried about making a carriage for the back to stick a few 56ers on to aid lifting
and it snapping the machine in two

Jcb released their new towable telehandler last week. I don't payy that much attention but the advert was saying highest lift capacity of a towable telehandler

Pondering the other day....now the 600 quid barrier to entry of towing has been binned off will we see more towable stuff do we think?

Pretty neiche tbh. If you are hire firm chances are you have a lorry anyway to move kit. So probably just owner opps looking at them.
One thing that I think will change is chippers. Not much price difference. Tree guys all tow them anyway. So why not have proper ones

For the trailer test ...basically a driving test with a trailer added on...trailer bit 5 mins rest was standard test.

Many of you will know I was in the market for a towable telehandler before going down the 3cx route. So I have done extensive research on these machines, as well as being party to the full spec's of the new JCB machine months before it was announced, as well as the new Manitou machine launched last month as well. (the perks of being such a hi profile user)
The Jmac is a tempting machine spec wise and I like the design, its nice and compact, has a high lift capacity claimed at 1.5t and is no doubt the cheapest on the market for this kind of machine. However having seen the Jmac excavators in the metal at Hillhead - I would avoid at all cost! Terrible welding, cheap plastics, badly fitting panels and they cant even put the stickers on straight. Now these seem like small details (except the welding) but when you can only judge a machine on looks at a show, it doesn't bode well for performance. The hydraulic pipework was tiny too, meaning flow rates wont be great. Yes this is on their excavator range and I haven't seen one of these telehandlers in the metal - but it doesn't reflect well for the brand in my eyes. I'd go as far to say that ever Carter had better quality welding..... and that's saying something!
The better, cheaper end of the market machine to look at is the Ausa T144h with a lift capacity of 1350kg, 4m lift height, and a price of £33,500+vat I am surprised these don't sell better. For Jmac money you get something with a name you have heard of and some dealer backup.
Then there is of course the Wacker Neuson/ Wiedemann TH412. I have spent a lot of time in these machines and they are brilliant, but don't quite have enough lift capacity for me at 1.2t - will just about pickup a pack of blocks but doesn't like it. 4m lift height. Cabs are tight but workable for a mini machine like this. Absolute weapon with a bucket on. Beware, the new ones come with two engine sizes and the bigger engine, now with DPF etc you cant tow as too heavy. Haven't driven the smaller engine ones yet so maybe the power I like in the older one I drive has gone now? Price of £41,625+vat when I was looking in the summer for the smaller engine model.
Then we come to the new boys. The JCB 514-40 and the Manitou ULM412H/ 415H (1.2t and 1.5t max lift respectively)
These are right on the edge of being towable and without a lightweight trailer, you wouldn't get the ULM415H on coming in at 2.9t without attachment! But with a 1.5t lift up to 4.3m the ULM415H has the edge on all the above models - but the weight penalty is significant to rule this model out for most.
The JCB 154-40 will lift a respectable 1.4t to 4m and comes in at 2.7t without the attachment, meaning it could actually be towed with its forks on board. Cab is huge, best in class for sure, but it has the 25hp engine (same as the smaller WN offering) which may well be adequate but might struggle with the pushing power I've come to like in the WN machine I drive with the larger engine. However no DPF or adblue to worry about and that will no doubt prove a selling point to many, and for fork duties I am sure these smaller engine machine will be fine. JCB price was £47k to my spec including bucket, turf tyres, LED light package, towbar etc. I stopped asking after the price went up twice while I was waiting for the machine to be released so I could actually see one and you can understand why I went the 3cx route in the end!
The Manitou ULM 412H comes with a bigger 35hp engine which will be welcome for bucket duties, however it can only lift 1.2t to 4.3m and personally thats not enough for me.
People with Avants, Multiones etc can bleat on about how they lift the most for their weight - and they do. They also have much more ability to run attachments and for the right work are great machines. But for pure telehandler work, unloading lorries on tight sites, lifting pallets on and off racking etc, you cant beat a telehandler and these little machines have a place in the market for sure. Knock £10k off the price and I would have had one all day long. But just cant justify the cost for the little use it would get as a single purpose machine.
