He won't be smiling like that when the lattice scissors shut on your finger in the early stages of build
Meccano was an education, Lego is just a toy , IMO.used to love my Meccano ....... still have a big box in the attic ... when I was very young (5 or 6) my old man had had his varicose veins removed (like grapes on his legs) and spent weeks recovering (pretty brutal op, back then) and built a very big crane (supposedly for me) on a 2ft high x 2ft square base ... jib touched the ceiling when up ... fully motorised ... used to make motors from old Smiths heater blower motors - solder some base angles to the bodies and 'turn' the spindles down to 1/8" by filing them down running .. being 12V DC they were reversable ... crane 'moved' twice in house moves, but eventually got dismantledI think the ali clamshell he made for it, decades ago are still in the box in the attic? Will have to have a look next time I'm up there.
Best 'toy' ever made
Lego gives you free thought education or at least the old stuff these days seem to be all specialist bits in themWhen it came to sandpit toys I think that Tonka were the ones to have, nigh on indestructible, but as far as I know, are no longer made. When it came to “ cabinet display” models , CCM were the expensive best and just about affordable when the pound sterling bought nearly two dollars, but not now, however, the quality of the mass produced die cast models from China etc has improved out of all recognition.
My collecting days are over but here’s a pic of a couple of my oldies.View attachment 4View attachment 40086
