and on the flip side, I can name many who have never done a days work in their lives, several who became 'the local scum'/tealeaves, a few 'dealing', several dead from OD,s, one 'nutter' (born psychopath IMHDO), who picked on the wrong bloke and ended up face down and many at varying degrees of 'ne'er do well'-ness !!

Chancers Re-visited. We started a technician bit back. Mid 40’s, worked for BMW and Audi before emigrating to Oz, where he’d been a forklift engineer and worked on wagons. I put him servicing our DAF that we use for internal moves. Next thing he‘d got the cab a third of the way up, weight on the ram, working between the wheel and arch. He didn’t know you were supposed to take the cab all the way over. We put him through an internal forklift course. Passed test at 12 (barely, we found out later), at 1 pm gets on the truck without checking it, (knows what he’s doing, remember he was a forklift engineer!) moves a pallet, parks truck across a walkway with the forks a foot in the air.

Someone asked him if he could weld. Yes. What processes? Can’t remember, it was in Australia. Can he use oxy to de-stress a plate that had just been welded? Course he can, just before trying to light the oxygen. So we just put him on ultra-low risk jobs, just below what we’d get a first year apprentice doing. Wants minute instructions on every job, even what size spanner to use, but if you pick him up doing something wrong he gets the arse because he knows what he’s doing. Manages to injure himself on a weekly basis, regular sick days, always on the phone, apparently to his doctor who seems to change his medication on a weekly basis. Frankly I don’t even trust him to carry a torque wrench, let alone set one and use it. I think his days may be numbered.
Update

While I’ve been off, he’s been given his end-date. Pleased I left my tools locked up.

What have you got? I’ve become addicted!!
Chopsaw and circ saw that fits on the rail. And quite like the 54v batteries on the 18v stuff like compressors and vacuum and recip.

I’ve the 54v circular saw on guide rail, it’s a beast! Just need some rails now! Would love the chop saw, but I’ve already the big 110v dewalt version so hard to justify another!

Oh I quite agree, hence mixed feelings.

When you think that less than a century ago it was commonplace for boys as young as 14 to be signed up for the royal navy. And it was also commonplace for 14 year old lads to start apprenticeships. Now they HAVE to be in education till 18 and many consider it a right to be doing nothing but "learning" until into there 20's.

Personally I think the world needs to wobble it's head and let kids like that leave school earlier to enter the workplace under supervision. With notable strings attached including day release to college to learn key skills.
Sounds like an apprenticeship 😂

Chancers revisited: revisited.
Said gentleman finished before Christmas, is currently deployed by a main dealer for a major UK manufacturer of 3CX’s. Posted a selfie onto Faceache while driving up a main Road in a telehandler. Not too sure he’s got a major future there. Now replaced here by an ex-motor Trade tech, top lad in his mid-20’s, who’s taken to the job like a duck to water. They are out there, you just have to look hard and get lucky.

Just posted this to highlight not to expect too high a level of after-sales support for a certain yellow brand from a dealer in the Norfolk/Suffolk area. The last job I set him doing was changing the fifth wheel on our shunter. Two days to undo and re-tighten 12 bolts. I gave up after that.

I saw that this morning - cannot be doing with the lazy work-shy prima Donna’s on that page, shower of twats who would be a nightmare to employ!

So long as they are a decent company to work for it seems a decent job to me. I think 24 an hour is decent money too. And that is realistically the same as what anyone working on a small firm would do quite happily.
