I think anyone who owns a crane like this and employs other folk to operate it must have uneasy nights/days
too right  .... used to have five operators on mine, which were 'run of the mill' 10 to 45 tonners and you were always waiting for 'that call' ..... on the whole they were very good, but you never knew  .... there was a lot to 'know' about the 45 Grove and all important .... a 500 tonner is an 'art form', with an entire bible to learn ...... that said he had the root sections out instead of the tips and zero ballast ... a total no no ..... inevitable outcome :(

can't see your emojis Aiden, but I'll take that as a hell of a compliment (y):giggle::cool:

can you begin to imagine the extent of the internal work involved .... the hull is a POP ... but all the bulkheads, ribbing, plumbing, electrics, companionways, etc., etc., .... what a job to get them all BANG ON ..... and then there's the confidence of totally prefabbing the insert ... you'd want to be damned sure the original hull was absolutely to spec, to the mil. ..... wouldn't want any 'steps' in the joint.

this is engineering on a serious scale ....... and here's another .... ;)

I remember a feature on the local news 20+ years ago about a Birkenhead ship builder (probably Camel Lairds) having financial difficulties again. There was footage of a built floating middle section of a ship bobbing around happily in the Mersey, but for some reason the contract had been cancelled before the ship that it was built for was brought in for the choppy choppy bit! I guess it would be quite difficult to sell that middle section on...

Don't complain - suggest what's better
They built the carriers in sections at different yards then bolted it together at Rosyth. Quite something to watch it come together over the years.
Must be much worse cutting up an existing ship that wasn't designed like that though.

That Komatsu looks pretty new! Seems an odd set up - I like the idea though!

Would of been ok for the job you did in Lincoln a few months back to get all your kit to a safe place;)
