Countersink in hardox 450 plate?

Anyone done it? Want to order a wear plate for the loader. Holes will be laser cut, but will need to be countersunk. I have HSS countersinks, a milling machine and Rocol fluid, I could always buy a carbide countersink. Possibly where the laser has made the hole it will be slightley annealed anyhow?

I think you'll find the laser cut surface will be "flame hardened" rather than softer.

That said, (after a quick lookup), you can expect Hardox 450 to be around 45 HRc and HSS 65 HRc, so you should be fine.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
wear edge is 'drill-able' with care and the HSS countersink should do the job, or sharpen a suitable size drill to a 90 deg point to remove the bulk of the material and finish off with the c/s bit ;)

Remember first time I did one ..basic magdrill bit and the drill wasn't clamping well ...yes we went through a few bits 😫🤦 learning curve.

you'll have gone through broaches because the mag was moving ... plenty of lube and steady gentle feed, a good sharp broach'll pee through it ..
used to have a notice on my guillotine and brake press asking to ensure that no mag.s were in use before turning on ... guillo was a 30hp motor and the Bronx had two 30hp motors running their pumps ... the dip in power when they kicked over was enough for the mag.s to let go momentarily .... took me a little while to make the correlation and quite a few broaches

I did some counter sunk holes on a cutting edge a few weeks ago.

I ground sharp cutting edges on a large carbide tipped masonry drill bit using a silicon carbide green grit wheel on the bench grinder.

Ran the drill in the pillar drill with steady form pressure.

You can counter sink it with a HSS bit in the mag drill if you have a variable speed drill.

Just note, the holes will be slightly harder after being laser cut, they will have a light hardened layer around it, but a quick light run with a die grinder will take the hard layer off

OK, so how about countersinking a square hole? This must be how the 'ploughbolt' type fittings are achieved, right? Should be doable from what's been posted above, it's four sided so hopefully not too much chatter. Decent HSS Cobalt countersink and Rocol.

Tried three companies, none of them can do the ploughbolt type fitting. Can get one with square holes laser cut cheap enough, so down to me to countersink!
