Have no clue what this machine is or what it’s used for if any one knows please let me know.

No input or output, I think it’s something sculptor biased only has a power lead coming off and no visible way to open it ether.

Would help if we could read any of the labels! Any inputs or outputs? Can you easily take a photo of the wiring/circuitry inside?

looks to me like a variable voltage laboratory power supply with a Variac in it

Reasonably confident it's a PSU for cutting styro foam.
The 'big knob' is as @V8Druid said, a variac.

these are the screws you need to remove to get inside

The should be a decent size transformer hanging off these bolts

The square plate will only cover a round hole where the optional volt meter would go.

Reckon you're right there, once saw someone carving a life sized horse out of polystyrene using two insulated handles with nichrome wire between them. 🙂

agreed .... used to use similar sort of thing (but with no access to more than 24V ) for lost form sand casting in ali with kids ...
polystyrene was such an easy medium for them to carve, very quick results and they absolutely loved it .....

IIRC I still have some old ones kicking about here somewhere .....
no way could you do it these days ...
foundry furnace, hot metal, potential for disaster ...
grew up and taught in the days when there were no ****in' snow flakes in charge and risk assessments were done by people with real world experience and the knowledge to see sh1t coming
