6 tonne thwaites rear diff to prop oil seal

The oil seal has gone on my 2007 6 tonne thwaites dumper it has spicer axles . How difficult is it to replace this seal ?

I’ve ordered parts 20 and 22 on this page

Not too bad, but last one I did, couldn’t get nut undone with a socket and bar, had to use a 3/4 air impact wrench! Can’t remember if it has a crushable spacer!

When I did the similar one on the duck it was a pop to do undo the propshaft then the yoke undoes with a big nut in the center pull it off then the seal will knock out then tap the new seal in using the old one or a socket so you don't damage it.

Spicer were cheaper than case for the seal

It looks easy enough - only nut 23 needs to be removed.
If there were a crush spacer, wouldn't it be on the 'inside' of nut 19?

JCB use the same style of uni-joint bearing saddles with instructions not to reuse

Cheers Mick I was hoping you’d chip in ! Can you identify the crushable spacer in the 3 rd pic above and I will order one up .

I was going on the fact that the seal has gone, that the pinion shaft may be moving enough to cause this! If not and the nut on the yoke (23) is all that has come loose you won’t need the spacer, if the nut (19) has come loose different story!

I wouldn't need to be very stuck to reuse, but they are not expensive, so my preference would be to replace.

if 19 is tight - don't go any further than doing the seal ...
pinions need to be pre-loaded, hence the crush spacer (or it would appear to be a multi choice shim job in this case) ...
not an easy thing to get right ...
if it ain't you are deffo going to need a spacer, selection of shims and maybe more bits too

I've done the same seal on my 180 digger. Very similar. I fooked it up twice driving through long grass.
In fact I've done it a fair few times on my thwaits 5t dumper. But not knackered the seal.

Ha. It's that long ago i can't remember. But must have been a piss easy job because i managed it.
I got a load of long grass wrapped round the prop. The grass fooked the seal up, but also acted as a seal. So when i steam cleaned it months after, it started leaking.

Like my old Dad used to tell me about my push bike, all the time it works don’t clean it! And moving on from that if it works don’t fix it! In boats or steam engines they would call the grass a gland seal
