Usually when the gauge looks like that on a p38 it is because the voltage stabiliser has gone closed circuit.

might explain why it never drops below a 1/4 since fitting a new pump/sender unit ... which is why I tend to brim it regularly .. had assumed it was down to the new unit not 'talking nicely' to one of the many ECU.s in the damned thing .. does it live behind the nacelle like most other vehicles?

I wouldn’t know it was just my attempt at humour. On older vehicles the fuel gauge & temp gauge shared a voltage stabiliser and when it went closed circuit they would both climb to top of the scale. And like you say they were often soldered to the pcb just behind the gauge.

the gauge hasn't been right since the moment I replaced the sender/pump unit ....
if it wasn't such a mammoth task i'd take it back out and replace the sender with what came out ...
neither were faulty ...

a pr*ck who dropped the tank to change a brake pipe for mot several years ago had broken a placcy vent pipe and just badly cobbled it back together and slung it back in place - unknown to me .. fill the tank and it pissed fuel out of what should have been, the sealed breather line .... wan**r ..
didn't realise this was the issue 'til I dropped it
God knows what he'd cost me in fuel spilt/evaporated?
