Volvo ecr28 problem

Hi, I have a Volvo ecr28 my problem is, it’s pulling to left over a very short distance, it won’t go
up a very small incline. It Digs fine, no problem. The digger was sent to a large reputable company for investigation and repair. Attached is the report.

Please see below a summarisation of my engineer's reports, unfortunately I do not have an official report from Volvo, but because I was present whilst he was here, I will summarise what was investigated on your machine.

Work Carried out Volvo ecr28

  • Washed off machine
  • Removed counterbalance
  • Checked over main pressures which were found at 235 bar
  • Pressures found to be dropping when machine was warm
  • Drained hydraulic oil from machine
  • Removed hydraulic pump as the testing carried out pointed the hydraulic pump was at fault.
  • Fitted new hydraulic pump to machine
  • Changed hydraulic filter
  • Filled hydraulic system with 40lts of new oil
  • Tested hydraulic pressures at valve block now at 250 bar
  • Stripped down king post
  • Removed boom and king post from machine
  • Pressed out bushes from king post and replaced with new
  • Removed bushes from boom arm and replaced with new
  • Removed bushes from chassis of machine and replaced with new
  • Refitted king post and boom to machine
  • Fitted new pins and greased

When starting the machine to move it to the wash area to be cleaned off, machine would not start and seemed like something hydraulically was stuck on after investigation and testing we found this issue was being caused by a faulty pump. We contacted Volvo who took the pump back and issued a full credit. A new pressure relief valve was fitted to the machine as this was found to be what was initially causing the drop in pressure (this was advised to us by Volvo).

Valve changed and the pressure issue was solved.

I then spoke with yourselves to tell you the machine was ready, at this time you asked me if the machine was now tracking straight to which I replied now the issues noted above would not cause the machine to track off to one side.

Work carried out

  • Carried out flow and pressure tests on the track motors & at the valve block
  • This determined that there was a fault with the left-hand track motor
  • Ordered and fitted x 2 new track motors
  • Machine still carrying the same fault
  • We then stripped and resealed the rotary joint.
  • This also did not cure the issue
  • We swapped all components from left to right
  • The issue remained V
  • We then swapped the four hoses from left to right that go from the rotary joint to the track motor, to check for hoses delamination or blockages.
  • The issue remained

The next point of call was to get SMT Volvo to attend our workshop to investigate the issue on the machine.

Work carried out by Volvo & our Engineer

  • Reset all pressures on machine
  • Tested pressures as at valve block and pump
  • Tested pressures when dead ending services to the tracks
  • Checked over all work we had carried out
  • Could not determine what the issue was
  • Mentioned maybe trying another track motor as they may be a fault in one of the new ones

I then spoke with our supplier of the track motors and explained the issue we were having and they we certain that it must have been a faulty unit, so they agreed to send another track motor out to us.

We then fitted the replacement motor and found that the issue remained.

Whilst the tracks were removed, we decided to swap the tracks from left to right in case this was the issue, which it was not. We also check over all the under carriage which again was all fine apart from X 1 bottom roller being seized, this was not found to be the cause of the issue as we removed the bottom roller and ran the machine with it off and the issue remained.

As mentioned to you on the phone of Friday, we at a loose end with regards to your machine and the issue that remains. We have spoken to many different people within our industry to try and sort the issue, but all are coming back with the same prognosis as we are.

Can anybody help, all suggestions greatly appreciated.

There’s really only one thing left to check, and that’s the main spool block, which I think is what @Alan caddy is suggesting? Swapping the hoses over at the spool block will hopefully swap the issue over to the other track. Which will then point to some flow restriction in the spool valve on the effected side?
There’s been an awful lot of money spent on this so far, I dread to think what the total is to date!

seems like that's been done - sort of - if they did indeed check flow at the block ...

could also be a collapsing hose to the motor ? but .... ^ ??

Thanks for all your comments, I’m having the digger returned this week as the repair company have no more ideas. I can’t believe that a Volvo engineer as not got a clue what is going on. pipes to each track have been changed over and still the problem persists. Replacement motors have been fitted without success. idlers have been removed and checked. Spool valve has been pressure tested.
please keep chucking ideas at me as I’m at a loss to what to do next.

You say pipes have been changed over, do you mean renewed or swapped so that the left hand lever works the right hand track etc?
Spool valve has been pressure checked, but remember pressure and flow are two different things, it may make the correct pressure but not allow the correct flow.

Has anyone checked the various adapters that the hoses fit to in ports for blockages .. yer never know? :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes the left hand pipe was swapped to the right side and the problem was still in
the left side. I’m not sure about the flow test, I will check with the company on Monday and confirm. Thanks again

If the dealer hasn't checked for that I'd take them to court if that's the issue!!
Lol back in 80's Ford 82and TW's had rubber gator round gear levers on floor,first time we got call thought fk gearbox strip down, couldn't get all gears engaged, luckily before we went crazy stripping down,saw hole in gator,large flat stone blocking engagement of pushing lever forward,taped up,then did another couple pretty soon after, service manager couldn't understand why we were so keen to go,told him we'd had gearbox top,side off,no mobiles in those days

Same in forward and reverse? Both ways tracking off?
the flow and return are just reversed in two ports so a blockage in one will affect flow in both directions

It may well be something that's lost in translation so to speak but reading you're list of things done doesn't inspire confidence to begin with tbh. Of course oil pressure drops when warm its thinner when hot so doesn't take as much pushing round the system. To change a pump before a relief valve seems a big jump in the wrong direction to me especially if relief valve is adjustable (in which case you'd try adjusting it to see if it makes any odds but main one on pump may not be).
Does it have two tracking faults, pulling to left and general lack of power?

Yes it pulls to the left when going up a small incline I had to turn sideways and go backwards and forwards to get up the hill, if that makes sense?
