For those of a tender age, purchase Tax was the predecessor of VAT but was only charged on "luxury" items and not at all on services.

and was supposed to have been scrapped/replaced by VAT ...... all they did was lump VAT on top of the existing prices

Yes, a lot of that went on . I think that officially one was supposed to wait a specific time before doing it but I don't think that people were too bothered.
