Looking at excavsators, little 3 tonners seems 4k is where they start to lose a lot of $$.

Whats the deal with 16 tonners, I'm looking at a volvo EW160C. well maintained but 11k hours. These good for 20k or would I be inviting a world of bills ?

There is a Guy named Marcus Plume from immingham way and he had a 160C that belonged to Sean Patrick Vincent that had racked up some serious hours 10,000 plus and that had service history all its life, when Marcus bought it the only thing he did was a bit of paint and some stickers, he traded it for a new one 2 years ago, if you want i'll ask him if I can give you his number ?

It’s funny the mentality on hours, a well maintained machine with a good driver but 10000 hours could outshine a 2000 hour machine with no servicing and a nobber of a jockey

As you say 4K in minis is quite a line 2000 hours is the sweet spot

I just did some sums of the engine. Average speed of a car over its life time is what ? 20 mph? So 20000 hours is 400,000 miles which is fine for a lorry but not many cars would you see so high

Ground engaging parts are replaceable, track motors are expensive.

Pumps can be rebuilt

Bushes and pins can be replaced

How many hours do you do a year

I think it’s all about previous keepers and servicing / history which is generally hard to find or rarely does a used machine come with such history

Hi Regy

I agree with your line of thinking. We will be using the duck as a materials handler on building sites mainly with occasional loading of 8 wheelers. So not a production digging environment.

I cant really find many 160's with 2 piece booms her ein the UK so its going to be sweden/norway/germany where im looking. There are many around 10k hours for £50k that look showroom in the cabs, not the arse ragged out like our diggers.

Just a bit worried what the likely big service items if failed would be on a 160. In terms of hours we would put maybe 5-10 a week on it.

thanks

I'll never understand the fascination with Volvo ducks? They simply don't do it for me. :cautious:

Wise words from someone who knows.

Each time I've changed my machine, within 6 months I've been asking myself, why? Answer realistically came down to the financial side of the equation. Keep it and pay a lump in tax or change it and gain the benefit ;) but it grated knowing someone else was getting a bloody good machine with any niggles long ironed out :p

In my experience, its only really us in the UK that are concerned about "hours" on the clock. How many clocks can be trusted anyway? In Europe machines seem to clock up far more front line hours but possibly they are treated with more respect that many UK based machines get.

I wrote a very long reply that developed into a rant about double standards and honesty, without having had an alcoholic beverage today :D but deleted it :cautious:

Just have heard a lot of bad stuff about reliability, back up etc, but, when it comes to the social media side of things, same people praise the machine, about how its been the best machine they’ve owned and they get looked after by Volvo etc etc, they all have issues at some point or another, but as rob has said above, double standards seem to cloud what some people say.

As for hours, as long as you are able to get the “official” history of a machine, I really don’t think you’ll have many issues, as has been said above, it’s only a UK thing. Got 10,000 hrs on my first duck and I’m pretty sure it would of done the same again.

further to what Ollie and Rob have said the Liebherr I've been on has 6000 hrs on it and Leister Gericke has 8000 plus on his liebherr so hrs don't always mean the death of a machine

Rail is one of the hardest lives you could imagine for a machine. Our gear gets hammered purely by the nature of the work. We had a hyundai dash6 get to 18000 with little issue and our oldest hitachi 170w-3 hitachi is over 14000 with nothing more than servicing, a hub seal and injectors (common here with s**t fuel). Most of the other hitachis are around 7-10k hours with little issue.
