Excuse my ignorance but people are saying to go for a mini digger with servo controls and avoid ones that don't have them.

What are servo controls? What is so bad about not having them?

I've tried googling it but there isn't clear info. I don't know much about diggers I have just started researching them.

servo controls / direct sticks .......
the latter is where the operating levers are directly mechanically linked to the main full pressure hydraulic valves that control the machines motions and can be quite a 'heavy' feel.
servo operated controls are where the machines main valves functions are operated by a low pressure secondary system that is operated by the control levers and gives a much 'lighter feel' to the operational levers (and are usually short arm rest mounted affairs). The much lower servo pressure is what operates the main valves functions. It also allows the levers and the main valve block to more remote to each other as they are connected by low pressure hydraulic pipes ... manual 'sticks' need to be generally closer in proximity as they are operated by a mechanical series of rods/linkages, acting on the main valve block
there is obviously a lot more to go wrong/fail in a servo operated hydraulic control system.... direct control trouble shooting is generally a case of follow the linkages back to the main valve block and most issues will be there ..... servos are way more complex to diagnose faults in
you also end up with a lot more 'slop' in direct sticks by the very nature of the mechanical set up and the inevitable wear it suffers

Non servo controls are directly connected to the digger hydraulic valves, Servo controls use low pressure oil to control the main hydraulic valves, to control the machine. Main advantage is easier to position the servo levers in a comfortable position, lighter in operation, needs less movement, and less parts to wear and go sloppy when older.

Google tb108 and tb210r and you see the difference the servo controls are on the tb210r.
It can be more comfortable on servos as your not leaning forwards
