When using a mag drill what sort of size hole do you drill for the center pin?

You don't drill a centre hole, it's meant to be spring loaded so you line up pin with centre punch and start drilling. The pin then pops the slug out.

The centre pin also acts as a valve for the coolant so you wouldn't get coolant to the cutting edges if you drilled a hole

I use an aerosol spray cutting fluid and just apply it as needed, the trouble with a cooling fluid on a mag drill is the mess. Very rarely is the fluid recoverable, and if cutting long sections the mess can travel a long way!

I tend to only use the water soluble cutting oil if I'm doing a lot of holes, I find it saves time as the cutters seem to start better, I can keep cutting without having to withdraw to lubricate, and the slugs eject a lot more reliably.

do it as well as you can,but learn to do it better
dam the sections with rags .... what we used to do in the bandsaws, which flooded the blade to lube, but more essentially keep them cool
Broaches last a lot longer with proper coolant feed through the quill and thus into the centre of the broach ... I use a pump up spray bottle to provide a pressurised feed to the mandrel fitting, through a tap to control the flow and a decent soluble oil ... last lot came from Smith & Allen

at a 10:1 solution it'll last you a while ... I bought a 20l to refill the lathe and miller and'll last me a loooooooooong time, even with a total loss with the mag drill
