THRUST WASHER

Can somebody tell me if TEREX DUMPER CENTRE PIN THRUST WASHER is an essential part of the centre pivot, i have been told that its not needed and can work without it,
Will this cause the centre pivot major problems?
The dumper originally broke into half re picture any thoughts on why? anything thing to do with the thrust washer etc thoughts please

My judgement is that if it as a thrust bearing in its there for a reason!!
The pic was when it DID have the thrust bearing in but now back together its been left out,

Was wondering if the thrust bearing could of failed or was not maintained properly for this to happen?
