As an ex railwayman off the footplate there was always a saying that Dead men tell no tales" when i first saw this i asked myself why did the first train stop (they are saying a fault) but i am sure the first train was under a signal gantry. However in the good old days if a train had an accident or a breakdown the driver went forward to protect the train and the guard went back to protect the rear of the train by putting detonators down at specific distances so a following train would set them off and stop. Was this a train with a guard on it or not, There has been a long argument for having guards still on trains even though the companies are fighting for single person operation. In the past there have been collisions like this when the AWS has been disabled for some reason or the signal that was passed may not have been showing a full bright light. One of my old drivers was killed in a head on collision a few years ago (God rest his soul) it was very foggy and the train coming in the opposite direction missed a signal due to the bulb not operating at full capacity! There have also been occasions when the sunlight can effect the visibility of signals too. I will be very interestead to read the HSE report you may be sure that the rail company will be wriggling about for a suitable answer at the moment. People take our trains and their staff for granted but believe me a driver is worth every penny he is paid to do his job, I have known several driver that have had nervous breakdowns over the years and been taken off the job, You also have the risk of Joe bloggs jumping out in front of you coz they want to end it all ( I have first hand experience of this and can tell you it is not nice)! Idiots jumping level crossings etc ect its a hard job.
