Telehandler Insurance

So iv had a letter through from DVLA telling me that my telehandler isnt insured, thing is i dont want to sorn it as its quite handy having the option to be able to drive it on the road when i like.

Hopefully someone could point me in the direction of a company to insure the thing?

Iv had a quick look on google but it looks to be a grey area, what is the machine classed as? Is it agricultural?

I have plant insurance but this doesnt cover for driving on the public highway unfortunatley.

Depends if it's farm spec or construction spec construction versions have legs and leveling axles where's farm ones don't but have bit higher top end on roads and a trailer hitch and braking port on the rear

If the DVLA had contacted you, there must be a log book for the machine (in your name), it will have the tax class on there.
You cant really go by farm or construction spec, as pervious owners could of re-registered it. I`ve seen farm spec registered as plant (the first owner using it industrial), and construction spec as agri (to save on tax).

I do have a logbook for the machine, it is road registered, i will have to look it out.

what I find with NFU , the more you put there way the better the overall price. They are not always the cheapest but when it comes to a problem there is no messing about. To give you an example a friend of mine had the bonnet robbed off is 535-95 on site over Christmas as well as the door glass smashed. £bonnet 2.5k glass £300, NFU just said crack on and order send them the bill. No messing about with preferred suppliers, multiple quotes etc they understand that downtime costs.

To me that is worth an extra 5% on top not to mention they have local office to pop into so no faceless call centres with a 20 year old bint who doesnt know what a telehandler is on the end of the phone.

Funny you should say that! Just spoke to NFU who directed me to my local office - I asked for a quote on a telehandler, there was a pause followed by "what do you mean by telehandler"... "Ok I have just googled it"... "Let me check if we can provide cover for that"... "We can only insure in as a special vehicle meaning you need to have an existing policy"

Also spoke to JCB who were very helpful - surprisingly they knew what a telehandler is

As I may have mentioned before, I have no time at all for the NFU, they screwed my grandparents charging them nearly 4K for a policy that I got down to less than 1k with another broker - with up to date valuations & better cover!!
