Sand is very compact and solid under compression did a small set of footings down the sandstifter gwitian many years ago bco just insisted to owner to wet ground up and roll it to consolidate it before pulling footings
Never had any mess in footings and just the standard bare minimum 225mm thick

My latest query on a job.

Pure sand to 2/3 meters deep as right next to a beach - structural engineer specified - dig to 1m125, .225m of concrete no mesh in the foundation 900mm of blockwork and then concrete slab

Just goes against anything I've ever been taught

I’ve come across 2 jobs recently where the SER specified no steel mesh in the found .
I did query it but they said it was fine . First time in years I’ve seen something not actually over engineered

lad who did Josh's attic beams seems a reasonable lad ... they were in school together .. and what he drew'd have been about what i'd have come up with
used to use a guy local and did a lot of work with him ... he was always sensible too ... would usually discuss it with me and ask my opinions, then see if it'd work OK .... rarely had to alter much .. do stuff long enough, you get a 'nose' for it ... and having a set of load tables helps to confirm yer thoughts

not a name I'm familiar with/springs immediately to mind, but does ring a vague sort of bell at the back of the memory banks ..... which're a tad on the overfull side ..........
used to like using Richard & Liz Hernon, at the Kingcoed ... was always a very sensible chap to deal with

similar sort of chap ,from bryngym ,no nonsense ,ask for a calc get it back ,nothing ever extreme
also had a green oak calcs book

he was my goto man ,architect who drew great plans with very little detail and measurements ,,but was the goto man for structure calcs for me and many others including other architects

Yes I think 17 cranes in total on that job, because of the ineptitude of certain people, thankfully I only paid for a few of them!
