Sprinter van vibrations with new prop

I’ve just put a new prop on my sprinter van . I’ve now got a vibration . I broke the little clip that holds the rubber boot that goes over the splines when I was fitting it and put a big jubilee clip on it instead . Could this make it vibrate ? The head of the jubilee clip is quite big compared to the original wee clamp thing

it does not take much to make them out of balance a plastic zip tie may be a better short term fix or even a stainless steel one they have a very small head part so may work as permanent.

Just put a second jubilee clip next to it with the 180dgrees round will balance it out

I remember when tractors used to have a power boost for PTO work, but not draft for some reason. When subsoiling we used to turn the PTO on for the boost anyway, rumour was that if the tractor wouldn't boost then you had to clamp a jubilee around the shaft to fool it into thinking there was a PTO shaft attached.

So the consensus is that the jubilee clip would throw it out of balance and give me the vibration?

Back in the day we used to put a worm drive clip around an out of balance shaft and move the heavy side round in small increments to cancel the out of balance. If there was no o/b to cancel it would cause it!

Had similar on a new prop I fitted to my transit tipper. It turned out the caps holding the uj hadn’t been staked in place properly and had come loose!!

Is it a big vibration? Was there a set way for the prop to bolt back in position and rotation wise, did you change the prop doughnut?

Did you get a complete new prop, or just a section to/from the sliding section (saying about the clip on the boot)?
If its just a section, or a complete prop come to think about it are the joints correctly aligned? not a spline or two out? Sometimes there is a pop mark/arrow on each side to the sliding section to align.

I got a complete prop . It was the carrier bearing that was knackered but at 175 k I figured I’d be as well replace it all .
I still had to join the 2 halves though . It had arrows on each half and I lined them up as best I could (the arrows weren’t right at the end but looked in line to me )

New or S/H?
As others said people used to use a jubilee clip as a diy prop balance, through trail and error, if every thing else is ok it could be that.

Check the propshaft knuckles are the same orientation at each end if they are out it'll cause the vibrations you describe. Worse case take a photo and upload.

doesn't take much to make it throw Vin .... jubbly could well cause it ... swap it for a cable tie and see if it goes away ... all other comments about alignment also are very valid ... that prop is going round at a hell of a rate in top gear and it has to be bang on

It was brand new . I paid 500 quid for a good one with grease nipples in the u jays .
I will swap out the jubilee clip for a cable tie and see what happens . I will get some pics as well

Try running a straight edge along the full length & across the uj’s, I think it is as others are saying the shaft is out of phase by a spline.
