Primer choice

Seasonal greetings everyone on here! Going to put a new 6mm steel flat plate in my dumper skip and was wondering which type of primer is best suited for new bare steel and over painting rest of dumper afterwards ie, epoxy, etch or zinc phosphate primer. This is not going to be a professional job as dumper is 20yrs old and I intend to do it myself with a roller but want to put a good base down so no/very little rust will come through within a reasonable time frame! Any other tips on prep/painting would be gr

A good quality Zinc Phosphate primer would be my choice. Make sure everything is as clean as practically possibly and give it a good coat.

Zinc Phosphate and then coat over with Chassis Enamel for me on a dumper.

Zinc Phosphate will provide both a barrier and a sacrificial galvanic protection, but isn't as tough as an epoxy paint (barrier only).
Zinc Phosphate is the pick where wear is limited (outside and under), particularly were mud builds up and can't be washed out.
If you are going to paint the inside, the tougher epoxy will last longer.
Epoxy or enamel over the ZP will give the longest protection.

If a dumper floor needs paint it's not working hard enough
The large areas should shiny and the corners and less used areas should have a protective and structural layer of concrete splatter

you can all laugh but that Firwood hammer finish I use is a very long lasting coating ..... couple of coats at least a week apart is some coating ... Me VA-r survived 6 years out in all weathers 'fore it got a repaint earlier this year and had just lost its colour ... was still protecting just fine

touch dry in under an hour ... give it a week between coats, if it needs it ... can really bang it on with roller or brush .... sprayed on it'll take as many as you like in succession and produce a smooth finish

this had a second coat .... in over ten years earlier this year .... doesn't get used a lot and stands in the weather day in day out
