I spend a lot of my time looking at used vehicles and plant. Half for fun and half for work. Is there an available algorithm/spreadsheet for calculating age / new price / hours / condition etc? Or do you all do it in your heads or by gut feeling?

Gut feeling but there is a market acceptability also.

It takes years of knowledge sadly but i can buy anything excavator wise up to 20 tonne fairly easily with hours / age. Variances

Annoyingly the new bottoms of 13 tonnes has moved a lot, it used to be high teens, in Covid it was 25 , currently it seems to be 10-13…….

Absolutely is , I was amazed to see a js130 this week 2010 for 13 k with 6 k hours on being retailed!

In Covid that was 25k ………..

You could buy any 13 tonne within reason from say 2009 for 15k-20 k and come out ok. Not anymore.

That said it’s not really my market buying the bottoms but we used to get a few from PX

Ducklings however are a nightmare. Way too slow to sell.

(31/12/99) 580 SLE ServoPower with all extras apart from aircon. 3500 hours. Needs a set of rear tyres soon.
Photos and videos of condition all appear to back up the hours. Not sure how many buckets.

2010 is now pushing 15 yr old though Ross

ducklings must have a very limited market .. Mr Right must be thin on the ground for them

Bonkers...I've seen 2010 Avant's going for a lot more than that. Damn site more iron in a JS

Case is a case…. Most jcb backhoes of circa 2005 ish are worth 20k so work back from there add the hours into it, if its what you think then its probably mid teens imo….

Problem is age and hours dont always work, 20 year old average hours wont sell, it has to slow down at one point, the fact it has 3500 is great but is it really that relevant that you want to pay ££££ more for than say 8000 hours? Depends what your doing but it still has seals, gaskets and pipes that are 20 years old regardless of hours

It’s like vans I guess,l (much more familiar with buying them!) usually prefer a 4 year old with 100K compared to a 10 year old with 50K. Stuff seems to wear out sitting still as much as it does being used sometimes!

It’s easier if you’re buying something that’s going to earn company money. New makes most sense most of the time, same with vans. Buy new - look after it and run until it’s scrap. When it’s something that you want for a non profit making job and plan to be able to resell at some point without a huge loss it changes the dynamics.
Love the comment about sellers hating buyers and buyers hating sellers…. It’s very true.
