I can't find the thread for tool recommendations- can anyone else?

Looking for recommendations for a 48" pipe wrench, but I really can't justify £500 for Irwin!

I've not been very impressed with my Teng Tools circlip pliers for the price. Soon upgraded to Knipex.

Teng seem to have got very expensive in the last few years. I really like some of there tool sets but I don't think they are worth it. I have a teng socket set I must of had nearly 20 years and and use it constantly with the plastic ratchet. It came free with a landrover magazine and the new equivalent is nearly 70 quid

I bought a pair of these and actually dislike them. No question the quality is good but a by far prefer the Irwin design that is a ratchet. You open them all the way with the button then push them forwards around the fitting until it's right. I find having to hold the button on the knipex fiddly by comparison and the Irwin button is bigger and easier to use.
I also bought one of the pliers wrenches at the same time. People seem to rave about them and I thought it would be a revolutionary tool that would be in constant use. It is a useful additional tool but nowhere near as universal as people make out. They have such a limited range of movement, again would improve by ratcheting, and they are quite bulky for what they are. And I think the internet gave me to high an expectation.
The high leverage side cutters and the high leverage combination pliers are my favourite thing they make.

What’s the difference between stilsons and pipe wrenches? I thought ‘Stilson’ was essentially a brand which became the generic name (like JCB/Hoover etc).

Prefer crescent wrench adjustable grips myself. I inherited a couple of sets of facom stilsons that seem decent

narrower jaws, grip tighter the harder you lever on them, British design (t'other design is IIRC American) but won't take the same level of abuse as the other design
