Pin shim material

Yes just wondering what a reasonable grade metal would be, some are advertised as "hardened".

I'm guessing you mean spacers rather than shims. They don't need to be hardened, the bucket and dipper material aren't and you don't want to wear them out first. Plenty of grease when you assemble things and you'll be okay. I've cut them out with a hole saw before now, still in service. You'll struggle to hole saw anything thinner than 1 mm, though.

As the guys have said no need for anything too hard. A lot of excavators get nylon shims on the front ends when assembled.

get them lasered out of some CR4 bright sheet .... assume you're after 1.0mm upwards. in the right sort of quantities they shouldn't be that dear and ppl selling them on ebay ask ridiculous amounts for them .... could do nicely with them at the right sort of prices -- don't forget to nest them too

There is a company in Redditch called Andrew and Elmes the phone number is 01527 522771 they manufacture pins, bushes and shims at very reasonable prices if you speak to them they will ship out whatever you want and Allelys use them all the time and so do I,
I actually owe them a couple of hundred for stuff so I'm going to see them in the morning.

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure the material spec was correct. We need 650 in total from 45mm id upto 140mm id for an export customer. From 1mm to 5mm thick so want to get the material correct before getting them lazered out by a family member. We plan to "nest" them and tweak the quantities to reduce material wastage.

I was a little confused as some are sold as "hardened" and from experience some thinner shims will shatter rather then bend. But to be honest i've not paid much attention to the material used until now.

.... as previously said, the shims don't want to be harder than the materials they're spacing apart .... cheaper to replace the shims than be repairing machine components/buckets ... CR4 should be just the ticket - good surface finish, but not too hard.
