Paint my containers

Hi All
I need to paint a 10ft and 20ft steel containers . The 10ft was painted grey which has shrank . Pics to follow . The 20ft is green and I want to paint it roughly the same green colour . ( it’s shabby and dirty and leaks a bit )
I’m thinking of roller as fence is nearby and missus painted it grey so I don’t want to risk pissing her off with green paint on her grey fence .
What’s the process I need to do in regards to prep work and then painting . I want them to look presentable with as minimum effort as possible
Any advice as always greatly appreciated

For prep work I'd say scrape off all the loose and flaky paint, and then give it a quick rub over with a stripping disc on a grinder. No point in going mad or back to bare metal. Then, slap good quality paint on thick with a roller in decent weather and that should do just fine.

As Doobin says, but I'll stress the minimum amount of stripping/ grinding etc. you can get away with. The paint used is pretty exotic and you'd have to assume it's pretty toxic given their expected environment.

As for waterproofing, I've used the rolls of bituminous roof sheet (malthoid ). In Oz, the summer sun will make the bitumen tacky enough to bond, but you may need to add heat for a good result.

I paint them with a Schutz gun run off a decent compressor. Cheap eBay 25l drums of paint with a bit of turps and horse it on after a quick once over with a flap disk on a grinder (although I have had to resort to the needle-air-gun on one really flaky box).
This method is very fast, but you will cover everything else in the county with paint too so only do it if you can convince your good lady that the fence and container would look better if they match…..

The only way I could get away with that would be paint the container the same colour as her fence !

Could always hang some old sheets over the fence while you paint the container

Do it on a windy day, say the wind blew the fence over… and it’s a bad plan so ignore me

Flap discs are pretty naff for this sort of thing- they clog up too quickly. Try a stripping disc next time, you'll be impressed.

here's what i've used on mine ... hangs in well and goes on very well with a roller ... need to thin it a bit with white spirit and I decant into a 5 litre pot for thinning/use .... could airless spray it, but need a good spray plant and it will consume paint at a rate of knots .... virtually no overspray/air-borne with airless

Needle guns a job that soon gets you looking for something else you could be doing mind

You might need to apply a primer/key in coat before you go with top coat. I've seen many just peel straight off within months of painting. It breaks your heart .

Nice one buddy ! That’ll be getting ordered .
I want to post a pic of my grey one as it looks strange the way the paint has shrank and I want to make sure I’m ok to paint over it . Will get a pic in the am
