You should get some power to a pin on the tow socket even if it's only a couple of volts

A car battery can deliver a lot of amps especially if the van battery is flat and the resistance is low.

A incadecent test light joined in the circuit will help limit the current by providing resistance and it'll help stop frying circuits

It'll be dependent on wether your trailer charge circuit was wired properly with fridge circuits ECT or was there just a switched live put in for charging the trailer

Shouldn't do if plumbed up properly. Should have a split charge module somewhere in the system that will stop it. Although if that has been installed on the trailer then it will be easier to bypass than if fitted to the van

if plumbed properly it should be a direct and permanent feed from +ve on battery to pin 9 ... no split charge circuit

Any battery charger should be fine, as long as you don’t try and start it until you’ve charged the battery.

An old school "dumb" charger is more reliable.
Many newer 'smart' chargers need 9~10V to detect a battery before turning on.

Yes I've had to put jump leads on from a good battery to persuade them to charge a really flat one

I found this out , I have an old Audi 80 convertible and I new it had a new battery . It was completely flat and wouldn’t charge with either of my smart chargers . I eventually put a semi charged battery in line and then put the smart charger to it and it works a treat
