The fault with them is mainly centered around the the 16 steps you need to go through every time to make the single knob turn either then heater fan down or the radio up
That does sound like a redesigned user interface might be in order.

I was told cat parts prices are based on shelf rental. So the longer an item sits on the shelf the more you pay. A commonly required item for modern machine is cheap. An obscure item for an older machine can be hideously expensive. But there parts availability is truly staggering.

For the common machines yes. Some of the less common machines, not so much so, unless you can wait months and remortgage the house.

They still get most parts though, some companies will come and go in the time frame cat keeps parts for and some really obscure bits. I use to work for a bloke with an it12f was 28 years old at the time, it was his pride and joy and kept immaculate. All genuine parts. In the time I was there he reconditioned the seat with new springs and seat foam, all next day parts ( did cost 3x the price of a new grammar air seat ) new door seals one piece shaped not cut off a real and new sound deadening on the bonnet doors.
I think that's pretty impressive to keep on a shelf for nearly 25 years
