But I've read elsewhere 4 years from new them every 2 years . Mixed feelings...

Over here we have mot for cars every 2 years and an emissions test for commercial every year.
Hgv is yearly.
Think first mot is due at 4 years old.

Yes I gather it's since brexit we trying to be as similar to Europe as much as we can

I do tend to agree ..... but stop changing the ferkin' goal posts annually .... Golf's emissions this year same as last = pass - then ... this year the pass level had gone down by 33% = fail - now ..... intentions = bin off motors faster

For some vehicles we have in the MOT test is the only inspection or attention they get in a year.

Mot is the bare minimum of standard a vehicle needs to pass for that hour only

spot on ..... you are responsible to maintain your vehicle in that condition for the rest of the year .... what a lot of folk do not realise is that un unroadworthy vehicle is an uninsured vehicle ... ppl need to read the small print

I think the yearly test is fair and helps to uphold a minimum standard. Also, there's a lot of jobs supported by regular MOT's, testers, mechanics, parts suppliers, manufacturers etc
Quite happy to pay my £35 and know my car has withstood a through inspection by a professional on a yearly basis.

I prefer the Italian option. 1 price for the MOT on site...and another more expensive price for a "remote" ticket and you don't need to take the car 
Mate you used to live near Naples .ran a UK plated car for years...nothing paperwork wise apart from sketchy insurance. Eventually got tugged driving wrong way up a dual carriageway to do a shortcut 🫣

Yearly is overkill and just turns into an opportunity for garages to bullshit unsuspecting customers into unnecessary vehicle repairs. Last one I sent the missus and they phoned her up offering £900 worth of repairs and when I took the phone and asked for bill without advisories it was only a 200 wheel bearing, but they implied to her the £900 was necessary.
It's more nanny state involvement in every facet of your daily life, the British speciality, "do you have a license for that MOT permit?" instead of pushing the responsibility for vehicle maintenance back onto the owner. Extend the MOT time period but have stricter punishments for gross failures when idiots are caught driving dangerous vehicles, then the rest of us can get on with our lives unimpeded.
. Amount of folk driving with one headlight ...in the pitch black it's damn dangerous. Or absolutely bald tyres
