I’ve a engine on a wood chipper, it’s messing around. It starts and runs for 5 seconds and shuts off.
Take the plug out of alternator and she works away.
continuity across the 2 wires in the plug so no breakages. Fuel set all refreshed and cleaned tank. Doing the nut in.
many ideas.

Is the oil pressure light going out?
Check the engine oil pressure, and the pressure switch.
The switch may have 3 terminals, one that goes to earth with no pressure, and the other two make with pressure. Or there may be two switches fitted.
The alternator charging, the red light gone out, lets the system know the engine is running, and to look for oil pressure, and shut down if pressure is lost, often the is a timer that's allows the engine to run for a few seconds to build oil pressure when starting.
My first thought is the oil pressure switch is faulty (second thought is switch wiring), the timer is allowing the engine to run for 5 seconds to build pressure, not sensing any so shutting down.
Disconnecting the alternator, fools it into thinking its not running, so allow it to over ride the oil pressure shutdown system.

Does it start/run through the woodchipper control box, or does the engine stand-alone? What make of chipper?
Some chippers have stress control that takes a speed reading from the alternator - if this reading is out of spec it may automatically shut the machine down through the control box.

Cheers guys for reply. Put new oil switch in.
Yeah, it’s tw190tdh. 45hp. Got a module 2006 h box. The schematic shows two wires heading from alternator one heading to module For speed signal (checked continuity- good, check volt approx 7 on start), the 2nd heading through loom to fuse (new) got continuity too. She’s not like newer models with an auto stress.
Glad of any input at all, heads fried.

TW 190 should have no-stress.
A mate had an older one of these (was a good machine) but had to rewire it as it had a bit of an electrical fire... Timberwolf helped him out with schematics I believe, but I do remember it being serial number based as they made changes to how they were wired up through the production run.
I’d speak to them with your serial number as a starting point personally.

that’s dead on m’business, you’re right, no stress it’s manual. Good operator good stress control. I may have to consider a loom and/or a h box module. Its definitely a superior machine to Some modern chippers. Old means more parts replacing for sure. But here, I’ve been through tw tech support and that man is something else. Very good actually , as a communicator of tech info.
it’s all seeming to go to the same places, but I suppose my real question is what, mechanically, would throw the speed signal.

what creates the signal? Alternator??hall effect pulse sensor?
