Which is better one big pump & flow control or a pump for each item?

Currently the machine is powered via a 540 PTO input to 3 pumps.

I wish to power it from its own engine.

Getting a suitable pto speed output gearbox to fix direct to an engine is looking like an impossible task.

So thinking of fitting pumps to an engine.

what's the machine ... and what size motor are we talking?

The require pto power is 40hp
It has 3 pumps
22cc 22cc & 8cc
Running at about 1500rpm
2800psi ish

The two bigger pumps can be on full load at same time.
One for the splitter & one for the chainsaw.
The smaller one powers a conveyor & small fan constantly & the input feed between cycles so not when the main pumps are on full load..

so the pumps are deffo running at 540rpm? not geared up at all? ..... small diesel car engine and g/box with a tacho to read the output of the box in each gear at say 2000 rpm .... find a suitable gear and run with it .. or work out the rpm required for each available to produce 540 rpm

No they are geared up to about 1500 rpm.

I have a 2.8L iveco engine in a vehicle that will never go back on the road.

Its a 2004 vehicle so no ecu issues to worry about.

Adding a governor could be problematic.

At about 1600 rpm it can produce enough hp but going on & off load will make rpm change quite a bit i think.

What does it tick over at and how high is the highest gear? Would it not just plod on at/just above tickover in top?

what are the pumps ... gear or VDPs?

At tickover it wont produce the 40-50 hp needed.

Was not going to use the gearbox at all.

I think gear pumps, whats VDP's?

variable displacement pumps (piston pumps)
