Hatz Diesel 1D Engine Flywheel Balancing - Pedestrian Drum Roller

Evening all!

Right… some of you may have seen my post in the classified thread (probably the wrong place to be honest!)

For ref:

However since then, I’ve sourced a new injector head. What a difference. I’ve stripped the engine down, cleaned up the bore. Unseated the rings, some had become stuck. Typically when taking it all
Apart one headbolt snapped. Anyhow… it’s all back together now…

And…. It runs!! It runs lovely! Aswell. Quite please with myself considering I’ve never done it before.

It’s a Hatz 1D41S Engine.

However having never had one of these engines or pedestrian rollers before I’m unsure if I’ve got the flywheel right as it seems to vibrate quite a lot (and no the vibrate isn’t on! Ha!) so unsure if I’ve balance the flywheel correctly. There is no locating pin. Admittedly one bolt seemed to sit differently however all bolts same length.

Anyone any ideas… I’ve presumed that the weight is at bottom when at top dead centre. Is this right? 🤔

not necessarily .... the cranks weights'd be doing a lot of the balancing ... it could be elsewhere ? 🤔

It’s what I do!
I don’t remember the supra engine not having a peg in the crankshaft for the flywheel let me have a dig around for a book!

Ok flywheel end of crank, unless the 6 x drillings are not symmetrical then the fly can be bolted on in 6 different positions, it does show a dowel in the parts either!

so no offset weighting then

6 bolts on the parts drawing so it could be fitted in any position, but I think it has timing marks on it! This should be a bit of a guide!

Thanks! @Mick-the-fitter! 👌
There is no obvious markings I can see. I put the weight party at bottom, or what looks to be weighted more when piston at too dead centre. There is your usual drilled holes around the outer but nothing that jumps out to say this is or isn’t the top. 🤷‍♂️🙈

Guess might of helped if I’d marked it at the time of removal but hindsight is a wonderful thing as we all know. 🤣

If there is any consolation the 1D’s vibrate a lot anyway and when fitted to the MBR 71 roller they rattle the whole thing to bits on tick over!

I have a 1B20 Hatz in mine. Its an absolute nightmare for starting the first time. I'm actually surprised I haven't worn the starter out. Just doesn't seem to be able to draw the diesel through. Once started it's fine restarting. Unless it's left for a good few hours then it's back to square one again.

fuel running back .. drawing air in somewhere

Where the hose runs from the tank via a little filter it pushes onto a connector which is fixed to the engine block, It swivels a bit and I noticed earlier while staring the bugger that a bit of fuel seeps from here when cranking- perhaps that's the problem-

Ah so there's no fuel pump?
no lift pump to get the fuel 'up' from a tank, but the injector pump can still pull air in through any split or poor fitting pipe, as can the fuel run back out of the injector pump if it's 'open' to atmosphere and end up with air in the fuel line supplying it.
