Ford 5610 electrics

I recently fittd a new complete starter motor & solenoid on my trusty old 5610 Everything works fine except I went to start it and when iIlet go of the key the starter was still engaged and stayed engaged I did manage to stall it and disconnect the battery both battery cables were getting a little warm, What do you reckon, Do you think it could be anignition switch gone faulty?

simple test to see if it's the ignition switch ... pull the wire energising the solenoid from the switch, at the solenoid terminal .. get a short length of wire with a spade on one end and pop that on the solenoid feed .. flash t'other end onto the live pole of the starter and flick the starter in/out -- if it performs as it should, try starting with the same method .. if the starter doesn't disengage when you de-energise the solenoid, the dog is getting 'hung up' on the ring gear .. what was the dog like on the one that came out ??
don't 'spose you eyeballed the ring gear through the hole when you changed the old one out/fitted new one??
