the stresses on the slew gear on these type of cranes is insane :eek: .... at least with a 'conventional' sort of crane you have the loading low to the ring gear and usually plenty of counterweight / balance ballast. ;)
loader cranes are solely reliant on structural integrity and the quality of the materials they are made from :unsure: .... brings a whole new meaning to deflection :eek::eek: and are very often being tasked with operations they were never designed to be applied to ..... they are loader cranes FFS :rolleyes:

I think some of this is due to most sites in the UK being so strict on lift permits but and mobile cranes, and lorry loaders being exempt so far easier to get on site regardless of the task

a "lift permit" is a purely 'in house' piece of bollox Smiffy .... mobiles and loaders will only be exempt within their own regime if they make them so.:rolleyes:

both are subject to LOLER and PUWER reg.s, need regular inspection and independent testing regimes, plus suitably 'qualified' operators - i.e. someone who actually knows exactly what they are about and what the equipment is capable of (y).... not some tw*t with a ticket he got for a one day attendance to Fred Carno's school of training for numbskulls :mad:

there is sooooo much to know/understand/learn about (a) lifting, (b) ground conditions and (c) the tools to do it with, it's a learn on the job/apprenticed type thing, until such time as the basics have been absorbed, assimilated and a trainee op. has sufficient understanding to be able to apply it all to various 'other' bits of kit himself, independently.

Mobiles and Loader cranes are such different tools:rolleyes: ....each requiring a skill set of their own, plus many shared ones too. understanding, knowing and applying their suitability to a task is one of those skills.

I know it's an in house thing but Its in place on the vast majority of UK sites
Balfour skanska kier and so on so therefore it's pushing companies to use these cranes inappropriately
I operate a hiab quite often so do know what's involved but it is so much easier to do anything on a large with a hiab as you just pull up and start no surveying the ground no need for banksman or slingers do it all yourself
