Looks decent idea the toughbook - how long does battery last on standby and how do you get your emails on it ?

Most modern phones can become a mobile hotspot so any laptop can connect to the internet via ur smartphone 3g using a wigi connection

i use the phone as a hotspot and a fag lighter charger for the laptop. Most of the time you can picup a BT wifi hotspot which are free to use if you are a BT Internet customer. Like I say not something I use every week but on the odd occasion its dead useful.

Phones are so handy and such a pain in the arse at the same time. I've become very strict with mine. It gets answered at break times after I've had some food. Or when I get home. Wouldn't get anything done otherwise, constantly going off with calls from customers, reps, fake HMRC scams, emails, faceache, twatter, instagram, some blokes uploaded a new video to youtube...... you name it, they are designed to keep us engaged, I predict its going to be the modern crack addiction.
They can be damn useful when on a job though, send photos of problems direct to designers, get drawings sent to phone etc I don't think I could go back to my 3310 I ran for way past its use by date.
As for Labourers using them to update their selfie profiles, I usually find mine had lost or broken it before it really becomes a problem. He soon learned to keep it in the truck Sometimes I think we are all too nice these days with people taking excessive s**t, fag, phone breaks. Its your job/ site, everyones phone goes where you want it to go - you're the boss!

just read the thread im gonna kind of reply to it all

i got myself busy a few years ago got uptown 10 guys on 3 sites doing building and groundworks, turn over shot up but profit didn't, stress went up i was jus either sorting problems or chasing more work to keep everyone employed, every friday was a struggle paying out and trying to get money in and hit targets, lads not turning in or doing stupid stuff.

i cut back to me and old boy foreman who'd worked for dads firm for 20 years and me 8 and a young labourer, he was keen but a bit simple. paid him ok £90 a day CIS for 19 year old didn't drive, could shovel and sweep up tried him on the dumpers but gave up. lasted about 4 months before i was having to knock him up in a morning and he'd stink of weed. left him digging my garden out by hand 1 week and we were watching him on cctv a bit he'd sit down for hours on his phone rather than getting done then going early. so after a run of missed days i got rid, yeah makes it harder, i work harder and sometime its a struggle but its great to be without the hassle and responsibility of him on the team.

sticking with just the 2 of us and self employed sub contractors works for me,

i have that from builders what you want £350 a day for 3 ton and dumper or £130 linear meter for standard footings dig muck away and concrete thats expensive, fine dont use me. i turn up set out check utilities etc get it done fast safe and correct, we even step gauge for bricks if we have to etc, lease with building inspector and clients etc often dont see the builder till their bricky turns up and we hand over at damp say floor and drains done, inspected square and all ready to go.

one builder asked us to dig out a floor in a barn conversion on a job we were doing the yard and groundworks on he was doing the conversion. i said i wanted 250 for my guy and 1.5 ton to dig it out saturday morning, he scoffed said he knew a lad and would hire a mini for 80. we came in monday he'd dug 400mm to much out and left it a bomb site of various levels and mess and knocked a wall down. cost the builder 700 in extra stone which they wheel barrowed in as he was to proud to ask us to skidsteer in after his f**k up.

we are paying joiners £210 a day and plumbers £250, brickies 560 per 1000 or £200+ a day. they want me and my £40k of digger and dumper then they're paying for it, too many guys undervalue themselves think its not a trade or a skill.

It's anything to do with machinery and groundworks that gets seen as unskilled. As said many people don't bat an eye at bricklayers, plumbers, sparks etc charging north of £200 a day (some cases half a day) yet expect tens of thousands of pounds worth of kit for pennies

If you follow some of the Americans on YouTube or Instagram they’re getting $130 a hour for machines and op per machine for under 20 ton stuff, remember the Norwegian duck lad saying he was on €85 Euro a hour etc where’s as here ppl happy with £30/hr and you go on Facebook and ppl seem proud of the race to the bottom like it’s something to be proud of going out for £150 a day with a machine etc

Had 12 guys on at one time ..... spent my entire life keeping them busy, producing drawings and ordering materials, then chasing the bills after spending yet more long hours getting them out and sorting quotes' plus all the other paperwork .... ended up with myself and two guys eventually, through 'natural wastage' ....... enabled me to be more selective with what we did and made a hell of a lot more doing it .... big is far from beautiful

Yep we have better rates than the U.K in France - but like the scandinavian countries our social charges and running costs are higher than the U.K so it tends to even itself out - every few years someone pops up with a mini digger and goes out for 150€ a day ............after a bit it all unravels.





Cost are going up some more shortly - we used to be able to use red - then they made us use something called GNR (no road diesel) - now they are planning to get rid of that because cos it doesn't fit in with their environmental objectives - so then its white I believe (dont know about the farmers)
Some localish firms were out and about the other day protesting about it and blocking the roads with some nice looking kit.

when we were looking at relocating, we couldn't believe how cheap the community charges/tax fonciere were over there .... our council tax here is £2,500 a year ... fortnightly bins, no street lighting and not much else for that princely sum.
Think we have some of the dearest leccy going and if you want 3ph ... just pass them a kidney .... 3ph seemed to be the std fit out there, in most of the country places we were interested in and leccy was 60% of here.
fuel was dearer - then ...
doubt we're far behind you now with DERV at or near £1.40 a ltr ..... don't know whether it's still the same, but no road fund duty and 2 yearly MOT ??

Plus ..... you can't beat the French at being bollshy, if their Gov. pisses them off .... as your pix show
