I have seen them with a rotator on the dipper arm, abit like they have on the big scrap shears… this is another level..

IIRC there was a guy from T C Harrisons on here or the CEF, put up an excavator they'd converted and put a rotator in the boom for tunnelling work ...

I don't think it's a bad idea. I don't think it's well executed. But not a bad idea. You don't need the full rotation but 20-30° each way. Would be similar to Wackers vds.
And looking at those tunneling machines I sometimes wonder if tiltrotator manufacturers will one day go a step further and do whole aftermarket dippers. You could build the tilt or rotate function into the dipper to reduce build height. Or just do extendable dippers as part of the package.
