I visited an old retired railway friend yesterday and he gave me his quarterly railway penfriend magazine on the front cover was this fabulous picture of the Swindon Works Apprentices workshop including a class room at the front of the room, This is where they trained for practical engineering and studying for technical qualifications, It reminds me of a great time and what a great talented and very skilled workforce we used to have in this country it is such a shame that the younger generations have no interest in anything apart from themselves and there latest Iphones and Blogging/vlogging.

Steady there.... Some of us still enjoy dubious engineering. One day I'll even build some steps to my office

No joking apart unfortunately there are not many people like you and Druid etc probably a good few people on here can appreciate and use equipment to make produce and repair things but we are all becoming a rare breed nowadays.

My old man was one of the grammar school boys who did national service and was then placed into Swindon railway works to learn from the bottom up. It probably helped that his father did an engineering apprenticeship in steam and then got into the motor trade on the A4 in Marlborough . I hope that somewhere in the stuff to clear his notes on the order of assembly of a steam locomotive are still present

Always young at heart! Just waiting around for the modern generation to get their ASR’s es in gear and realise what we could if we really wanted to. It seems that all they teach at college now is how to plug the lap top in to the can reader, and that’s engineering level 3 sorted

Wonder if they were educated in how to go on strike too seems to be all the rage at the moment!
The whole construction industry is in need of an overhaul but I've no idea how

yeh but you're 4 years past the magic 25, when you're no longer the 'younger generation' and your insurance premiums halve
