So as many long time former BCEF members know I've been wanting to start my own 'dog and pony show' for a while. When we were living in Southwestern Alberta I was seriously looking at getting in to the Spider Excavator business as were living within an hour and a half of the Rocky Mountains and several open pit coal mines not to mention some ski-hills, pipelines, and other infrastructure that could be served by such a machine. But trying to find the work and convince people its the right machine for the job over using more invasive equipment was pardon the pun an 'uphill battle'. A long with a number of other problems like being screwed around by landlords as there are no real decent rules or regulations for tenants there. So last year my wife said enough is enough we're going back home. So since we've been back we've finally been able to save up some money towards a mortgage down payment and I've been busier with work than I have been in several years even working right through most of the winter. I recently started looking in to getting a Kubota loader/backhoe as a way of doing some side jobs and getting started on my own business by having a machine that can do a bit of everything. Something unique to the Kubota design is that the backhoe is detachable and can be replaced by a 3-point hitch with a pto. So my plan was to procure a mower implement and a box blade and maybe a snow blower. The loader uses a skid-steer style quick hitch so a number of different attachments could be fitted, I was mostly thinking about a set of forks and maybe a snow bucket at a later date. This particular machine had around 800 hours and an aftermarket heated cab as for reasons unknown to me Kubota won't put a factory cab on this series. Here are some pictures of the machine I was looking at that the dealer sent me as it was some distance away from here in Southern Ontario. So this week I started going through the financing bit and some minor paperwork but it looks like it will have to wait till we are able to buy a house and pay off a few things in the mean time. So that's a bit frustrating but it will be nicer to have our own property and some space of our own.
