Accepting credit cards

I've been approached by a new customer who is only willing to pay through credit card. I'm not currently set up for this as all my current customers pay by bank transfer. Covid has at last killed cheques - thankfully.
Anyway, I've had a quick google and square look pretty good. I'm looking to do it remotely and only want to pay per go as this may be a one off, so don't want monthly fees, etc.
Does anyone have any experience taking cards and who do you recommend?

Thanks for the warning, but the people I'll be setting it up for are a legit lot. They have been given credit cards for "small" purchases to enable easy accountability and to stop any temptation to petty cash fraud.

You can get a reader but the fee for not using one is not that much more plus you can legally take phone sales unlike a lot of the others where it can be done but is fiddling the system.

Did some research and was surprised how cheap these new ones are.

I have a sum up, keep it in the van and I've only used it a couple of times fees are low enough and no monthly fee. Credit cards or any card can end up with someone putting in a chargeback claim I know some people refuse to do card for fear of chargeback or having to put right work after a few years.

Can't you just send them an invoice for bank transfer

Sign up to square & use your phone initially to test it out using up the £1k intro deal then get reader if it works to shave a little of the fee.

PS then give code to others to get £1k free again. In my best year I did £45k for no fees

It too upto day on fees but at the time sun up were the cheapest processing fee and card reader around £25 ish although I don't think you can do payments over the phone with it.
I use quickfile for my accounts and they have a few payment partners but no idea on costs and would assume other accountancy packages do similar?

I have used Sumup on the Xmas tree farm. Can’t do phone payments.
