I guess that was the optimum position- far back enough to be safe for a while, but still visible to ships at the required distance.

didn't realise it was still in service .... thought it was one of those 'national treasures' that needed saving ..... been cheaper to stick a big **** off LED array atop a tall mast ... and let that one go ...... can see 'em for bloody miles ... it's possible to see a single head torch from my patio, on the hills across the valley .. 2-3 miles easy .... these daft sods who go out hill running in the dark see them regularly
