Hi - I'm looking at buying a 21/2 or 3 ton 'old school' digger with 'NO' ecu or fancy electronics to do so work around my small holding. So my question is when did companies like JCB and Kubota introduce ecus in their engines - Many Thanks

couple of days after Noah landed  ...... Welcome Boyo(y);)
.... you'm gonna have to go back a fair way and be prepared for a lot of repairs/re-pinning/bushing and struggling to find bits ....
's not so much the engines that have the ECUs ... it's all the other Fandango bits on the electrics / hydraulics that're the issue usually ... the likes of PUMA control panels/dash boards, etc. :(

Mid 2000‘s you will still find plenty of basic machines. And I suspect many in the last decade have been more basic than you’d imagine!
if it’s got a fairly basic analogue dash, then thats probably the most sophisticated bit on the machine.

fancy dashboards and security systems are going to be the bits that let an old mini down imo.

Thanks for your reply I know other things will be worn but it's the expense as well as sourcing of old ecu etc which I feel would be the problem. I already run a 20 year old Defender and nearly 40 year old tractor on if not daily at least weekly basis.

If you're looking at 2.5 to 3 ton so you can tow it with defender yourself then that's ok but if you're not gonna be moving it about going up to 3.5 ton would probably get you better value for money.

How does the takeuchi tb125 compair to that lot? It was my long term plan to get one if I get enough digging work.
