O Licence

Have a deposit down on a 7.5t to start with, hopefully buy a grab lorry down the line. Do I need an O licence for doing my own work? Have no plans to do haulage for people, just cart stuff to and from my own jobs. If I do need one, will a restricted licence cover me?

new to lorrying so not a clue about a lot of stuff

Assuming NI is the same as mainland, yes you`ll need one, and yes a restricted will cover you.
Yea all links on NI Direct lead to Gov UK sites. So on a restricted I can do all my own stuff, just can’t cart a load of soil from a to b for a customer?
Read something about needing a contract with a garage for maintaining the lorry, would by brother who is a time served mechanic with Volvo be suitable for that?

If your brother has somewhere suitable to do the inspections, he`ll be fine.
You can move your own stuff, but as you say you cant move some thing for someone else, but if you dig the soil out and it becomes yours, your ok to move it yourself.

2009 Iveco EuroCargo 75 160 I think it is. Ex Road Service, 113k kms on it, not many for the age (probably burnt more fuel ticking over with the heater on than actually driving😂). First choice would of been a DAF LF45 but hard to come buy so this will do to get started, don’t think I’ve give massive money for it, £5750, full years test on it.

Yes have decided just to do the thing right, just do what needs done and be fully legal. I’ve sold my dump trailer, tractor is next to go. (Don’t need £75k of tractor for 100acre farm).

Yeah as said restricted o licence, agreement with someone to do your 6 weekly inspections (this is where it costs money, not all are as good as others), roughly 3k in bank account and no need for transport manager. You will need to advertise your operating centre in the paper and give time for anyone to object

Don't bother applying for an interim as you won't get it granted any quicker. They may ask for further things, I was asked to provide evidence of how I'd been able to work without a lorry for the last 8 years or what ever it was.

Once you've got it granted you will need to do a new operator seminar. Basically they are checking your not just a dumpling ect.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully my 6 weekly inspections will be cheap/free (brother😂)
Operating centre will just be the farmyard, same place where he would carry out the work, is a shed a suitable place to work at a lorry? There meant to be a pit or a lift?

You should be able to push for longer intervals than 6 weeks due to the limited milage.

And most firms round here running the odd wagon just have a bloke turn up in a van to do all the work and lie in the mud outside

They don't like vehicles older than 10 years to be less than 6 weekly even on limited milage. They have a guidance sheet on website for it.

I suppose the only thing you need to do is take it for break test every so often and if your brother has a qualification in hgv mechanics then that would be good help for the case.
I'm sure Rory will be along shortly, he is alot more up-to-date with this side of things

You can check the hours on the dash.

TBF mine was o.k they are a bit crappy in the plastics and seem to light up a new warning levery time you start them, most of which can be ignored but mechanics seems o.k.
Watch the rad they are stupid low and won't take any abuse.

Mine was a 2010y same model but had been converted to a hook from a little curtain sider, cost me a lot of money but everything is expensive over here ... I paid 36k€ and got 29k€ after 3.5 years of running it... but it made life so much easier.

At the kind of money you paid you can't go wrong really and it wouldn't suprise me if you go 12t version after a while when you see the benefits.

Right, Restricted O license is nice and simple. Fill out your application, put advert in paper and pay money... then wait.

Servicing -
Go for 8 weeks or 10 weeks service interval, FYI on the application you don't list the age of the lorry your looking to buy or the actual use of the truck. The Inspection/R&M contract can be done in house, mine is done by myself on a 8 weekly regime, although frequencies have gone to every three weeks in the past when busy..... Nothing stopping you listing yourself as the responsible person and employing a mechanic to check, the only thing you MUST remember is in the event of a accident it's whoever is listed that goes to court accused of manslaughter when something goes wrong (I.e the Bath Tipper).

Facilities wise there are lots of things you "SHOULD" have.... but ultimately the key action is whether you are being picked up on R&M on roadside checks or Plating (MOT) If you consistently have issues you will get questions asked...... Realities wise though your expected to have a space suitable to thoroughly inspect your truck.... Your Pal from Volvo sounds ideal and ultimately he will know what he needs and what he's happy with.

Actual day to day use......
Restricted allows you to transport your own goods or items under your possession. So you can Hire someone else's digger, transport it to a job and hire it out self drive to someone else, You can also purchase 3t of gravel, deliver it and get paid by the recipient. This is Not classed as Haulage as your profit is made from acting as a merchant.

What you cannot do is function as a Haulier, so you cannot get a customer to pre purchase material from a quarry, you collect and use it on there job and only charge haulage...... It's as finer line as that.

CPC wise, IF driving is your job role at that time you NEED it....... I do NOT have a CPC and we walk the line... but put simply -
1) I drive my lorry from the yard to a job with a digger, use the digger and return home empty - NO CPC REQUIRED
2) I drive my lorry from the yard to a job with a digger, drop the digger off for someone else to drive and go to pick up gravel - CPC REQUIRED
The grey area and the line I walk is what timeline is utilized in this "Not the main role" definition... If you take a 8 hour day only I could be seen as a Driver only as I could spend 8 hours moving three machines to a job. My personal opinion is the sprit of the law says it's rolling time.... I.e. provided that equipment is not utilised by another person surely the reason for moving it to site is the job... not the transport..... But that's a test case for me to have one day.

Tachographs are a Interesting one on the 7.5t lorry. But IMHO my advice is just follow and roll with it if you can.

Regarding the Interim license.... We had one, well worth it if you have good reason (e.g Bereavement, emergency job, or similar) but the majority of the time it's just impatient people and thus they get there money taken and the license denied.

Regards to the "New O License Seminar"...... The invite is one of the funniest threats I've ever read... (You are not forced to attend, but there will be tea and biscuits and if you don't we will come to see you). My opinion of it is Fantastic and the HGV inspector they sent was outstanding and was incredibly down to earth and helpful! Ask questions and make sure you pilfer all the knowledge they have!

Lorrys are a PITA, but they are fkn handy!

Very interesting but none of that here thankfully.
Of no relevance to the thread but may be of interest
Over here to transport goods not belonging to yourself you need a FIMO which i believe is a 4 week course - no servicing requirement in my scenario other than the yearly test and tacky/limiter every 2 years - no need for yard or money in bank as far as im aware.
But who the feck would run a wagon without 3k in bank anyhow 🤷‍♂️ ..... especially an IVECO Thomas ;)

Great post, appreciate it. Nice to see it all in layman’s terms that I can understand, doesn’t seem so scary now 😂

Do I need cpc for carting materials to and from my jobs?
