We were working near this monster rapid impact compactor today - I was amazed how close to the existing building they operate (but they definitely know what they are doing!).

Looks a good tool, but to do any large area would take for ever. What are they achieving by compacting such a small area?

They seemed to be focusing on the pads where the new columns will go from what I could tell. He wasn’t working the entire site - would compact a focussed area, they’d level it off with cement bound material then he’d do another pass in the same places.

I would assume the machine does it its self until it gets to a set resistance. Operator plays with their phone until time to move. Still boring as hell though.bloody slow though ..... imagine getting up to operating that on a daily basis
If it were manual how many operators could you trust to get the compaction right day after day without moving just to relieve the bordom?

Thinking about it I know someone whos son drove a hammer piling rig. Great money, but so boring he needed excitment at night - he's now inside!

Everything these guys do is GPS/machine controlled/data recorded to the mm, there’s no margin for error on their jobs.
The kit they run is incredible - their site cabins are set up as the base station and all machines feed back into it. They know the exact compaction of anywhere that hammer has worked as soon as it’s finished a cycle.
Mega outfit, very impressive seeing them in action.

Got to have the perfect ground conditions to run that kind of kit, hit any kind of wet ground and you’ll end up with a sloppy mess! Used the stone compactor piling rigs before, they are a good tool, soon give you a headache working near them though!

We work on a lot of sites ahead of this firm - they are regularly on terrible ground but somehow turn it into something big buildings go up on. They are some sort of magicians I think!

Ground stabilisation is a wonderful thing.. wonderfully expensive, but turns something once unsuitable ground into rock hard stable ground !

I was on a pipeline reinstating job when I worked in u.k .... did about 2 months before I felt suicidal....... on the way to the job I thought about putting the van in the hedge and hurting myself "a bit" many a time
